He is quite a bit younger than Ricco and Schleck - Keep that in mind. Whom of you knew who Riccardo Ricco was two years ago?

Yes, we knew about him two years ago.  Andy Schleck maybe not - but then he is much the same age as JL.

In any case, the only reason I compared them is that they are all TDF rookies.

Experience and age in cycling is not measured in years racing and years, but number of "hits" at a certain level of cycling.  Like training, the more you do the quality races('hits"), the better you become. SA cyclists get sort of 3/4 hits per day of event on the Worldsview races and the Giro and possibly one other big tour a year. So that totals around a good 10 to 15 days of quality riding at that level, therefore only those amount of training days.

Euro youngsters do 15 days per months for avg 9 month of the year. Therefore once we are over there,  we are playing catch up and you will generally see SA riders only ever peaking or showing their promise later on.

Keep you eyes on JL and be patient..

The irony is when SA won the World Cup in 1994 .... how did the SA react??? This is the same feeling I have with RH and JL in the TdF .... why does hubbers want to compare SA to the international front? Common .. give RH and JL the benefit; they deserver the recognition just being at TdF reagardless there result in the tour!!!

Yip, we should just be happy they are there. The europeans have always been in there so it's no big deal for them. They are just as ecstatic when they make it in other "non-common" sports.

mr brother in the uk tells me the commentators there are under the impression that there is only one african in the race - Robbie.

froome is considered british, as is barloworld.

when someone emailed them to tell them that there are in fact three africans, even though froome is on a british license, and barloworld is uk registered but sa sponsored they said that its a load of ****. They say froome is british thru and thru, and RH is barloworlds only contact to africa or SA

We are all african. South African to be exact and from the west rand. The Cradle of human kind proves it. Oh crap, here comes another religious debate.
