Argh, I got caught out by having to pay the R50 CSA day license (missed that when entering – I (wrongfully) just assumed a paid-up PPA membership was fine like the majority of other road races I enter).

And then got asked to pay for a CSA racing license 'cos of my % seeding – first time I've encountered that as well. Definitely not for me. 😅

Looking forward to a (hopefully) more relaxed ride in A tomorrow. 🙏

Otherwise, awesome to see all the volunteers – collection was quick in Durbanville. The traffic back to Stellenbosch, not so much. 🥵

Hmmm... I'm in $ and never got asked to pay anything other than my entry fee and my CSA R50 day license. I think whoever you dealt with was speaking a load of hogwash. I'd say it's worth arriving early tomorrow morning and trying to fight it at the morning registration.

I'm not going to lie, but they did seem confused (maybe with what I was telling them, as opposed to them not knowing). 😀 I kept on hearing "paddle license" (not pedal) being repeated to another volunteer. 😅 But regardless, I didn't mind having to pay the R50 day license, as it isn't a PPA event and all that – totally fine.

I didn't have (for this event) and never have purchased a CSA license (day or annual), let alone a "racing" license.

I've always been in the alphabet soup, last year's CTCT I got seeded in @ (my highest). No CSA license/racing license there. Maybe that wasn't racing vets (or whatever it's called).

It does seem strange to have to "buy" a "racing" license for an event upon arrival at registration (glad I went today and not tomorrow).

But, as I said, first time for me, so maybe I just didn't understand how it works.

Interesting that you didn't have to buy a "racing license". I didn't actually ask how much it was, but the guy from CSA who the 99er registration lady took me to said I needed a license, after I asked if they were referring to my seeding, on top of the R50 day license which I didn't (missed) pay during registration for the event last year.

It was at that point when I said if I don't want to buy it, can I just ride in A and they said yes. 🤷‍♂️

Uh... the though of paying money to CSA just makes my blood boil. This is according to WP cycling website:

Racing licenses will typically be needed only for provincial or national event. New licenses, including renewals, can be purchased online on the CSA membership page.

Happy you didn't pay them anything.

Thanks for sharing that! I'm glad too. 😅 Maybe it was more of a "why don't you sign up for an annual racing license" kind of pitch (giving them the benefit of the doubt). 🤷‍♂️

So if you ride in the groups before A i.e. $, #, % there's nothing distinguishing you from the other riders, other than the $, # or % in front of your event race number – no other number/sticker or anything to say you're in a "racing" category?

They don't deserve the benefit of the doubt but it's a Friday so lets give it to them 😄

From everything I've seen (keep in mind I have only been racing for less than a year) yes the numbers are exactly the same, just different symbols beforehand and maybe sometimes a different colour I think?

Someone definitely made  a mistake unless you are U23 or Elite level racer?

To Race in a racing category all you need is a CSA MEMBERSHIP @R250/annum. A racing license is only required if you want to attain Nation colours or represent your province at a National level event.

So like a chump I thought this race was on sunday and domestic planning was done around this assumption, the end result being that I have no car on saturday morning. If anyone is passing through stellenbosch and is happy to give me a ride to the race start (and home), I'd appreciate it. Some info:

  1. I'm likely starting group D/E and don't mind getting there early/waiting late.
  2. I'm more than happy to pay for petrol
  3. I plan on picking up my number on friday, so could pick up yours too (if this is allowed at the 99er, I know people have done it for other races) and bring it to you the day before.

DM me if you're happy to help.

I'm expecting awkward silence.....

So I've got a ride to the start. Can anyone recommend a safe cycling route back to stellenbosch? Once I'm on either Bottelary or Polkadraai I'm sorted, but a sensible route from the race end to there would be appreciated.

Take Fairtrees Rd (the one you start into, but turn right), left at the first robot into Legato (away from the golf course), continue till the second circle, hang a right down Brackenfell Blvd all the way to Bottelary. You will likely get a lot of Brackenfell cyclists also going back home that way.
