What is the most cost effective way to upgrade my Scott drive train to a 1x11 , what is the total price more or less to get something like this done, including the labor ,

Posted

I just renewed the drive train (1x12) on my bike. Consider the following:

Cassette, Chain, Chain ring. Best guess is about 3k or thereabouts. I did replace the bottom bracket as well which was an extra 900 odd. Labour to get it done was 450.

I have a SRAM NX set so I got an el-cheapo SX cassette and chain on special from CWC and new ring and BB from Evo bikes. Shop around for components and deals and save a bunch of cash.

I went down this road recently and settled on the Shimano Deore M5100 1x11.

I did a lot of homework and made the decision based on price/ performance/ reliability. I place less emphasis on weight and have no regard to needing to ride the top end components. I also prefer the Shimano downshift lever which works both ways as opposed to Sram just being a push lever - again my preference for riding style and duration of rides.

I bought it here: https://www.summitbikes.co.za/index.php?id_product=1674&rewrite=shimano-deore-m5100-11-speed-upgrade-kit&controller=product excellent service from Summit Bikes.

I've done quite a few hours on the equipment and am very satisfied - I can't imagine the performance of the higher end components being multiples better, even though that's what you will pay. .

If you are currently on Shimano, you are unlikely to need a new hub/ freebody and can likely add a 104BCD chainring to your current crank.

Thank you Sandro for the shout out / vote of confidence. OP, Post some kiekies (photos) of your current drivetrain so that we can see if, as Robyn mentioned you'll need any additional items not taken into consideration. Some entry level bikes do not make allowance for you to upgrade the cassette as the freehub only takes up to 10 speed. Then on the crank you may have a square tapered BB or a crank with rivet chain rings

Basic budget setup if the current setup can accommodate the upgraded components:

Cassette - Sunrace 11 - 46 R1525

Chainring 104 BCD - 34T R429 (Rapide)

Chain - KMC 118 Links R550

Shifter - Deore - R695

Rear Derailleur - Deore - R995

The prices as per Evobikes except the chainring.

I upgraded 2 drivetrains in the last month.

Bought an 1x12 SLX upgrade kit for my kids 11-speed and upgraded my XT 2x10 to XT 1x12.

To summarize what was written:

- Derailleur

- Shifter

- Chain

- Front chain ring (will also be specific to your crank)

- Cassette (my 10-speed hub could only fit a 12-speed Sunrace cassette). I I wanted XT I would have had to fit a new freehub which wasn't worth it - so THIS will be your biggest challenge.

Evo & Bike Addict often have GREAT upgrade specials

I went the other way… back to a 2x11 setup; call it highveld and coastal gearing. For a roadie, or rather my type of riding, I prefer smaller jumps between gears. The “compact” cassette better allows for that.

LBS helped with a second hand shifter and derailleur, and then new cassette, chain, two chainrings, cables housing and labour. Was around the R4k mark, I think. Was difficult to be exact as I initially when there to buy a new wheelset (incl. tyres, slime and labour) which the cost was known (min of meer).
