New Helmet Advice (for a not too serious mountain biker)

I'm looking for a new Helmet, think it's time since my old Catlike Leaf helmet was bought around 2015 or 2016 (about 10 years old helmet and thousands of hours in the sun). If I'm not mistaken the suggestion for replacing helmets (even when not damaged in any ways) is 3 to 5 years.

What would you suggest for a new helmet? I'm looking at something between R1000 and R2000 and was looking at the Leatt helmets at Cycle Lab (unfortunately the Fourways store did not have the Leatt AllMtn 1.0, but the Leatt Trail 2.0 was comfortable and I like the fidlock clip for the straps, the Fox Speedframe was also nice).

Any good cycle shops in Gauteng where I can have a look at a fairly wide range of helmets?

I prefer to buy this at a shop rather than online because I can actually try it on and decide if comfortable enough, probably won't be heading back to Cycle Lab Fourways because of their large difference of stock and prices comparing the web site to the store.

Maybe go to a Specialized store and look at their helmets? The prices are usually very good on their helmets and in your price range you should be able to get a decent helmet with MIPS. Maybe have a look at the Camber helmets? I got one last year for a great price. Good fit for me.

Most certainly the Scott MIPS - they have them at Mellow in Broadacres - R1699.

Superb helmet for the price. I absolutely love mine.

The other day I walked around the house getting progressively more irritated about where I may have put my helmet, until my cousin told me it was on my head… 🤦 They’re incredibly comfortable and lightweight, too 😂

Link to Mellow page with the colours available. It’s called the Scott Argo Mips.

Ben or Liam at Mellow (my LBS) will sort you out quick sticks.

I forgot about Mellow Velo in Broadacres (actually bought some Scott BOA dial MTB shoes there a couple of years ago).

And the West Rand Specialized Shop is now on Hendrik Potgieter rather than very far into Krugers Dorp, so I will pay them a visit as well.

Agreed

Very surprised and impressed with the Specialized range.

Besides protecting your noggin is there anything else you want from a helmet?

cool colours?

Safety specifications?

head shape and size? Some helmets fit egg shaped heads, others round etc

lights to be mounted?

To peak or not to peak ?

Not really looking for anything specific, but MIPS may be a good idea for extra protection, otherwise anything will go. Not too keen on a black helmet purely for visibility when on the road, but other than this I will take what I can get and is not uncomfortable (which is why I want to fit before I buy).

Love the Fidlock clip idea! Super easy to put on and take off your helmet. Check out the Troy Lee Designs A2 MIPS – it's stylish, keeps your head cool with great ventilation, and the MIPS tech helps with impact protection. For bike shops in Gauteng, Bike Addiction in Pretoria's a solid pick. They have lots of helmets, so you’ll find one that fits you and your budget.
