Howdy - One for the drivetrain experts.....

I replaced my road bike - Ultegra 10sp chain recently.

I had a KMC chain (that I've never liked due to being noisier than the 105 OGchain which it replaced, and it didn't come close to lasting anywhere near as long as the predecessor) with Ultegra cassette and chainrings and replaced it with a 10sp HG CN95 Shimano chain.

I've done about 200km since new and shifting and lack of noise is excellent.

My question is, if I back pedal to lube the chain it wants to climb the cassette and shift and it obviously can't. My previous chains didn't seem to do this - is this due to Shift Ramp technology or something like that that Shimano introduced more recently....my wheel (Zipp 404 spins very freely).

Cheers

Hi, with your chain in the smallest casette sprocket, you need to line up the jockey wheels in the center of the fist casette sprocket using the the outside limit screw on your rear deraileur. Once this is lined up you will have to check if your gears are correct, going up and down the casette and adjusting the cable accordingly, then you should be able to free wheel anti clock with out any issues. Hope you come right, kind regards

I'll have a look at that. It wasn't on my radar as shifting up and down is fine but I'll give that a look tomorrow.

Thanks

Just also check your pick up pins on the chainring. Sometimes if they worn or fallen out, they tend to affect the back pedalling.

I'm not understanding that ,- Ultegra cassette has pickups but no pins......just like 7 seperate cogs and 3 linked....? I have as spare cassette that I can try. I haven't ridden my road bike much and only notice it since the new chain....

In addition to what's already been said ...

Does it happen on all gear combos.?

Is it possible that it's in a gear where the FD is contacting the chain enough to cause it to want to climb.?

Seems to happen on the few that I tested. No contact at all with FD.

It tries to climb, derails a little and bunches up as it can't climb in reverse.....

I would first check if the chain is directional or not. If there is writing on only one side of the chain, that side should be facing out/ towards you.

Please post a picture of the front of the packaging of the chain.

According to this, shimano says their hg-x chains are only for mtb.

According to the teTechie at Cyclelsb Fourways they work for road. My understanding was "Dyna Sys Technology" or something like that, they might not be but as I said it shifts well and rides quietly like the prior Ultegra and unlike its KMC predecessor. When I fitted it I checked and afaik it's not directional. If it's not intended for Road I'm happy to keep riding it as the only time I pedal backwards is to lube, and I'll just pedal fwds....😁

This chain is not compatible with road groupsets acording to shimano

Firstly the model names it shows, are mtb groupsets only. Secondly, the small picture of the bike (under the "TEC") is a mtb. It will show a roadbike( bike with drop bars) if the chain is compatible for a roadbike

This is a weird thing and its the first time I noticed this

I just checked, they seem to be directional, I installed it writing outwards, right side up on top, afaik that's correct.

I can't find any reasonably priced Shimano road chains other than KMC and I hated mine.....not sure how good the gold KMC chains are....

And.....I just wanted to thank you for highlighting the packaging as this is primarily what prompted the decision to not ride any further with it ..

Don't see why a mountain bike chain won't work on 10 speed group.

But with a change of chain it would be worth checking derailleur setup and B set screw.

The other big thing... how old is the cassette and chainring? It could just be a little too worn to take a new chain. This I suspect could be where your problem lies.

Was working perfectly with my old KMC chain but it was past worn according to chain guage. Spare cassette same result. Blades all good.
