From the foundational moments in the early 1980s when DEORE XT first revolutionised mountain biking, SHIMANO brings fast and reliable shifting, a robust drivetrain construction, and refined braking systems to more riders with the latest introduction of DEORE XT M8200 Di2 components. Following the recent launch of our flagship XTR M9200 race group, DEORE XT receives key technology and design cues from XTR, delivering a robust group designed to withstand the demands of real-world riding, and consistently redefining what’s possible on two wheels. And now to wait for the GRX version

or see what compatibility is like between new MTB and current Gravel Di2
(Is the 'brain' of the system in the battery?)

Current GRX Di2 will work with XTR/XT/Deore Rear derailleur, I believe.

It will.

BUT.

Still limited to frewheel body.
I sit with the normal Hyperglide body that can only handle 11-36 (Unless the new un-released 1x GRX long cage will be bigger gearing)
That said, if you want to go XT or Deore and use 10-45 or 9-45 then you have to go micro spline.
Running Zipp 303s, Zipp does NOT manufacture a micro spline freewheel body. Then new hub.  Only micro spline hub with a 24 hole is DT Swiss 180 for around €300.

So no reason for you to go XTR or XT when you are on GRX Di2

Definitely 24 hole Micro Spline hubs around, so you can run a 10-45 cassette with Deore/XT/XTR and build it up as mullet.

Any DT Swiss hub will be able to run micro spline. Zero Two wheels also come with a MS option.

According to DT Swiss website, the following combination does not exist:

142x12mm
24 hole
Micro Spline freewheel body

Except one:  180 hubs.

And they cost as much as a new wheelset.  😁

If you have a link or two to hubs that might fit the above profile, I would love to see some please.
