OK, let's be frank. One can spot the quality of a chamois a mile away. Just feel it with your fingers. Don't! and I mean never! try it on in the shop! I was shocked when the gent at the local shop recommended I try out the Assos to compare with the Santini. "Sir, you can even take a spin on here bike to test." So what happens when I do not like it? Hell, we put it back on the shelf. Or is this the designated "testing" unit? Sharing is caring, but not with my bibs, thank you very much. It's just plain wrong. I will never ever do that. But to cut a long story short...

1.  Buy decent quality bibs.

2.  Use something like chamois cream or baby powder, or your gf's spit to reduce chafing around the area.

3.  And most importantly, RIDE MORE THAN ONCE A WEEK!

I used a locally manufactured bib, for our sponsor New Balance. i did start getting a nit of chafe, but. 4 things:

Milking Cream

Assos Cream

Fissan Paste

Fizik Gobi

You'll be fine!!

I took a small jar of fissan paste and assos mix with me and reapplied it after 4 hours.

Not sure if I would buy Tony's bibs, but if they are not too tatty and you are same size as him and the price is right, hey!

I used Cape Storm bibs for the Epic' date=' with a good chamois cream, no problems at all. and the CS bibs are pretty cheep.[/quote']

FF, are the Cape Storm bibs ok length-wise?  (down on the thigh, I mean)?   I bought a pair of Cape Storm non-bib shorts to use on the home trainer - but the legs are noticibly shorter than any other make of cycling shorts I've ever had.   Wondered if the bibs are the same?

on this topic' date=' has anyone had any problems with the quality of their assos bibs? my boyfriend has a few pairs that were given to him just before the epic so aech pair was used about twice during the race, with the assos cream and were washed in the bag with the special washing shampoo (the blue stuff) but at the back of the chamois, in the middle where there isn't much padding, its got holes in the material. do you reckon they'll fix them or replace them?[/quote']

Never complain about ventilation - I remember 43 degrees in the Karoo - would have killed for some fresh air down thereWink

Keith, CS have 2 types of bib shorts. One set longer, the other shorter. The ones with the grey stitching not as good as the plain black ones. The chamois in the ones with the black stitching seemed to delaminate.

Ride the stuff your butt is used to. But: Just remember that saddle sores on the Epic will be like herpes. They won't get better during that week. I used the Assos mille and survived unharmed.

2 Epics and a freedom challenge later I use a mix of anatomic (with the gray/Silver name - train on green anatomics) and castelli. Did the freedom challenge alternating between two bibs (22 days) 1 anatomic and 1 castelli - never had a saddle sore. I do not use cream but might apply a bit of fissan paste on the spot if I feel a bit of chafing. Maybe I am just a hardegat boertjie jacostrydom2008-07-26 00:52:26

After 4 days in my sponsors Anatomic shorts I was at the Doc for saddle sores & in much pain. I switched to my Giordana bibs & after 1 day saddle sores had  diminished & by the end of the Epic they had disappeared.
