Looking for Joburg’s best road & gravel riding (overseas visitors coming)

Hi all

I’m out of the loop so would appreciate any advice. I have a seasoned cycling mate visiting from Australia next week for the week and would appreciate any advice on Joburg’s best road and/or gravel rides that showcase the city and surrounds.

He is keen to ride as a pair or join local group rides. Early mornings are available and can travel a bit (Cradle, Magalies, Suikerbosrand etc.).

Any current must-ride routes, regular group rides, or tips would be much appreciated!

What level of rider is he? A classic and fun mid-week morning ride is E2E (engen to engen) starting in Bryanston - can get racey on Tuesdays and Thursdays, depending on who shows up.

A good and safe weekend ride is riding from town to the Cradle, doing the loop, and then back (100km + ride).

Thanks @TheDogShow, will definitely add a day in the Cradle to the list and will consider the E2E as well if he feels up to it

Sure thing, if I list bike parks:

Buffelsdrift - they opened again earlier this year

Wolwespruit

Grootfontein

Cowhouse

Rosemary Hill

You can then do the full loop at Cowhouse (around 50km - not 100% sure about the distance) then cycle to Rosemary Hill after the Cowhouse loop (+/- 8km) then do the full loop at RH (around 35km) and then cycle back. This will either be a century or close to.

You can then do a loop to Bronkhorstspruit via Cowhouse that will get you close to the 130km mark with a crap ton of elevation. You can also go to Cullinan for some pancakes and lastly if you're really keen you can head out all the way to Loskop and or even Dullstroom on some leka dirt roads. This will come in at around 300km (Mainly the C2T route)

Thanks @RobertWhitehead - sounds great, going to look into these routes and make a plan

Definitely get him to join the ICG rides, they do some amazing gravel and MTB on top of their regular road routes.

They often meet at Engen in Rosebank. Reinhard at Ukhu would be a perfect introduction. Happy to introduce you guys.

I sometimes take a small group of mates on urban/CBD graffiti rides as well, chilled Sundays. Welcome to join in.

Suikerbosrand, Cradle etc that you’ve mentioned are also good. There’s some good gravel around Suikerbosrand too.

Close to Sandton is Taroko Trails which is gravel friendly and has a bike shop, coffee etc.

Loads of great options. 🙂
