Hi all,

I was at my bikeshop and mentioned that I definitely want to do the Argus next year and now they recommended me to buy already roadtires for my mtb, am not sure what he mentioned.

Am currently having a Silverback Alpine, what sort of tyres would you recommend me for this and is it indeed wisdom to already purchase these?

From friends I understood that they only install them the week before the Argus, when would be a good moment to buy them. I still want to do the MTB Challenge the week before as well.

Depends on how much riding you are going to do on the road. MTB tyres can be pretty annoying on tar and you will wear them out pretty quick. Continental make some decent slicks. Changing them is not big deal, should take you about 10 mins to do the swop.

Changing tires isn't very hard work. If you are going to do your training on the roads, it would be better to gety slicks now. If you are going to venture into the mountains I'd stay on the knobblies. Slick tires with a thin flat profile is advisable for the Argus. You might get them cheaper now, as some of the shops like to mark up their prices before the Argus.

Putting slicks on will definately make it easier. This is how I started out as well, MTB with slicks. Now have two road bikes and a new MTB

Hi,

You have a large choice of road tires for MTB wheels. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/c/Cycle/7/Tyres_-_MTB_Road/   .

Can I just add, those road tires for MTB wheels can be VERY VERY difficult to fit onto the rim so do check that out. For an example, when I used Specialized fatboy tires, I didn't even bother taking any puncture kit as I knew I wouldn't get the tires back on, I would rather call my brother to come and pick me up.

I use my MTB to commute to work, got two pairs of wheels one with slicks and the other with Maxxis.

Ride a pair of Kenda slicks I got at Sportsmans Warehouse for about R49.00 each.  Have been riding for about 1000 k's and they still have the join weld down the middle of the tyre. No problem with punctures as a normal pair of levers get them off and on in minutes.

When go offroad I just change my wheels back to the Maxxis, easy.

I used to ride Continental Town & Country tyres, got about 8000km out of them with tread remaining. Nice low rolling resistance but still useful on hardpack because of the odd tread pattern.

Then I replaced them with Continental Top Contacts. Awesome tyre for road riding!  And it has the added benefit of their new puncture protection system and the super reflective beading on the sidewalls. Great tyre!

With both of these I've had no punctures. Only got one or two with the Town & Country's when I did a bit too much off-road.

Ask Trailrider about the Town and Country's he rides every where on his.

GregSalomen - Are you happy to put Birthday card on the package as well. Our tax will cost the same as the tyresLOL
