People who fly with their bikes, what is your recommended box/bag/case.

Needing something that will inspire confidence and not have me stressing every time I fly. I understand I should avoid the soft bags. Are the Scicon boxes worth the cost or should I go for something cheaper.

Ideally id like something that fits a bike securely and not be a big box that requires extra packing like bubble wrap, pool noodles et al

I bought a titan racing bike bag 2 and a half years ago and I would say it’s one of the best cycling investments for me to date. I did have to cut the insertable supports to size (I don’t think that normal though).

I’ve flown a number of times with multiple different bikes and airlines (internationally) and even had family use it, never been stopped or bothered whatsoever. I do find my L pyga slackline doesn’t fit well and I have to be a bit creative to fit it, but otherwise my xc and road bikes have always been a breeze.

And yes, definitely avoid the soft bags. Terrible experience.

  • How often do you fly/are planning to fly with a bike and to where?
  • Local/International?
  • Roadie/MTB?

Ah, yes, I probably should've been more explicit.

International - probably once a year. Locally, maybe 2-3 trips a year.

Road / gravel bike.

Ive generally avoided travelling with a bike because of the far, just once taken an alloy mtb from cpt to durban in a cardboard box, and brought a carbon gravel bike back from spain in cardboard too, but I packed those things like a lunatic, and added loads of ballast so the ACSA b&trds couldn't throw them around.

Superb, thanks Scott. Ive not seen the titan bag, but will do some gobbling.

Would 2nd hand be a no-no, or are they generally pretty hardy and even a used bag would be a good buy?

I baulk at the scicon pricetag

I got mine on sale for R5500, I see they are currently on sale at bike addict for R6500.

I think secondhand would be good, I have used mine a lot and it’s still perfect. I tried getting a used one at the time, but nothing was available.

For sure, nothing comes anywhere near the Titan’s value for money. Evoc is also nice, but I haven’t seen one in a while.

Road / gravel bike.

Unpopular opinion incoming. I've done multiple Alps trips, Italy, Mallorca and last year Southern Spain so this is a somewhat educated opinion.

For international road rather rent. No hassle of bike boxes. which makes moving around a million times easier. Also your bike won't get wrecked and your rental bike is already there so no stressing about will my bike actually show up?

As far as bike boxes go I'm generally against them unless you travel with a bike A LOT!

  • They are massive so storage is a big issue for something you use at best a handful of times a year
  • They tend to be super heavy
  • Not to mention expensive

For me carboard boxes from the bike shop are the way.

i live for an unpopular opinion - they are usually the most informed and valuable.

this is so true. i've been petrified of travelling with a bike, and had recommended friends to rather rent, which they did in Mallorca. I was going to do the same in Girona, but for 3 weeks, it actually worked out for me to buy one used from Buycycle, and now i have a bike with an adventure behind it.

i didnt even think about storage, and that is an issue for me. it probably makes the most sense to just grab a cardboard box from a shop if i do intend to take a bike with. i'd have to travel at least 80 times to equate to the cost of a good bag/box.

thank you for being a voice of reason. cardboard/rental it is

I'll never take my own road bike to Europe again.

On our Mallorca trip we tacked on 2 days in Paris and on our recent Spain trip we tacked on 2 days in Istanbul and 2 days in Tangier which would have been impossible if we had lugged 2 huge bike boxes across.

You make valid points, however I would still go for a bike bag if taking the bike. Last time I flew with a cardboard box it arrived completely torn open, as in my bike was completely visible. Also when travelling internationally they get pulled aside and customs give you a hassle 7 out of ten times, never happened since I got a bike bag.
Solid travel cases I would steer clear of, they are far too heavy and yes, they take a lot of space. However regular ones actually fold up pretty well.

You are 100% right about renting, if it’s a short trip. But on the other hand it is nice to ride your own bike.

Hi, extensively travelled with bike internationally....if you are going with a bike bag:

Get one that has removable or at least replaceable wheels....most have fixed rear wheels that have good protection but those exposed trolley wheels in front WILL get ripped off at some point.

I agree about a bag - it really does take the hassle out of travel (mostly), but is expensive and bulky.

Just a comment about renting - a great option - there are SO many bikes of all shapes and sizes for rent (Europe). BUT, check insurance - we rented and it wasn't possible to get cover from the renter......and my insurance didn't cover the rented bike (as I didn't have an insurable interest in the bike, apparently. So, one spends one's day double-checking where the bike is......

I have the bikebox from bikebox company :

+ : it folds pretty small, which is very good for the local trips for SA's, Herald, 94.7, etc...

it obviously protects the bike really well

- : it's pretty quickly took shots, I must have flown to jobug maybe 4 or 5 times with it, + herald, say maybe it has 10 round trips tops. The straps aren't great quality, if one of the clips breaks the box can (and will) partially open, and whatever is open will be ripped appart during transport.

My bikes have always come to destination in perfect condition though, so I guess it is a good product, but don't expect to be using it for many many flights, you'll have to replace it after I would say 10-15 trips tops.
