TNT1 and Crux I agree with both of you. Yet' date=' (yes, but)what do the UCI rules say wrt to finish?

Don't get me wrong, I see the officials at many races seem to have no idea what they are doing, and the safety of the event is questionable. But at the same time, I see just as many riders thinking and acting like their own safety is not their responsibility, and yet most of them that act this way are spending as much time training and racing as pros, even are pros. Even if the barriers or whatever are placed incorrectly, ultimate responsibility of avoiding riding into them is surely the rider's?

I mean if the barriers are not placed according to UCI regulations, and I'm riding towards them, I'll try my best to avoid them, and argue the point afterward. Not make my statement by crashing into them. That instinct of self preservation again...

TNT1 I agree with you, as the "law of the sea" states, the rules do not absolve you of the responsibility to ensure your own safety and avoid collisions.

That, and we all signed (even the pros sign them) the entry form that says something along the lines of " riders responsibility to know route, blah blah, and something about loss or damage your own responsibility, blah blah"

TNT....not everyone is as nice as you.....the guys in the front WIL NOT SHOW THE HAZARDS!!  Read it....understand it......remember it.....this is just how it is.....LIFE IN THE BUNCH.....

The guy sitting in the bunch has NO CONTROL.  NO SIGHT.  So your "self preservation theory" in the Elite bunch WILL NOT WORK!!!

What the hell are everyone about???  Just pack the damn cones correctly....out of the road (HEL, you have a WHOLE HIGHWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) neatly in a way that wont cause sh!t....problem solved......Confused

Spinnekop, I raced Elite for nearly 8 years, as well as some time overseas, and my observations are only based on my experience.

Yet in the great picture, as Cox so apty stated, if the rider must follow UCI rules (arm warmers ext) then the organisers should also be held accountable according to the rules, and CSA should enforce these rules, after all they do take money from the organisers and riders to officiate at these races, mostly to ensure that an acceptable compliance to the rules occurs by both the organiser and cyclist alike. Whew long sentence.

Yup....blah...blah...blah....go tell that to the family of the rider that wont be earning his $$.......

The "route" (Ending) was not yet finished when we got away.....so how in the world do you expect me to have a look at the finish if it was not even there yet...???  Dead

Do me a favour.  Have some compassion.  There are riders in hospital that are not as fortunate as you to be able to type this sunny morning!!!!!  Not because they do not take responsibility....no....somebody decided it was a good idea to pack cones in the middle of the road.

TNT....

I have no doubt in your capibilities or your knowledge.  I know you are a seasoned rider and have way MORE experience that most of us on this board.  I am not on a personal level though.

My feeling is that a normal person would have thought....."hey....wait a minute......these guys are going to hammer it down here......why not put the cones on the edge of the road......KOTS....if the can ride for 97km on the tar without goin on the gravel, surely they will be able to do it here....

Fair point, maybe I was a little one-sided and overly critical of the riders in my comments. I agree that the organisers of a lot of events could be a lot more professional and considerate of the riders safety. But once again that is an issue that CSA need to address. Something in terms of having a CSA team to inspect and end educate organisers when it comes to safety. But we all know that CSA wont pull finger and make it happen, as long as they get their "fee" from the organisors they are happy.

I think maybe what I was trying to say is that riders need to take more cognisnace of these issues and be a little more progressive and constructive. Maybe form a rider's committee to take up these isuues with organisors or something.

Suggesting for next year to the organisers:

THINK.

Allow for a gutter all the way to the line. Set the finish on the leward side of the road and place barriers and cones off the road in the gutter (Along with on end of the finish.) There is space for this. OR

place a 1km flag and arch up and then barriers all the way to the line. THe arch being inflated will be softer than strawbails.

After reviewing all the photo's and comments I think it was inevitable that someone was going to hit something.

The design at the finish was flawed from the start. I just hope they do something different next year.

That's me on this thread Tongue

Note that the Cones were packed neatly, out of the road....

There were still people crashing into the barriers...

So how should it be done for next year???
