The XTR V brake pads on my MTB seem to be very hard and make terrible grinding sounds when they get hot (i.e after a few seconds of use).

Have cleaned the pads and rims but the cleaning effect does not last long.

Time has come to replace them, any recommendations for a slightly softer pad?

Not worth putting discs as I intend to trade the bike in some time soon.

Swisstopit... sounds like something someone said to me once.

Actualy have a set at home somewhere that i bought long ago, tried fitting them and could not get the rim clearance right (pads are curved ever so slightly) and i'm not very patient when battling with *** like this without a decent bike stand ect....so went and put XTR's (pads are flat) on again.. mistake.

Any ideas if the XT pads are softer, I would expect that Shimano also make pads with different compounds (sorri have not had time to check shimano's web site).

Not using the wrong pads ie ceramic on normal rim or vice versa?
Koolstop pads works best for us

Good point, dont think so... other than the packaging how can you tell? Are the pads inscribed with ceramic on them ?

Stop fooling around with brake pads. Get Koolstop pads and be done with it. Settle for nothing other than Koolsop Salmon or Red. These are two colours indicating for use in wet conditions.

This is a standard Shimano pad fitted on the wheel below. Notice how the pad picks up aluminium from the rim, embedding it in the rubber. This creates the scraping noise referred to.

This is  Koolstop Salmon pad, uses for several thousand kms. Notice that it has picked up no aluminium and is still in excellent condition.

This is the rim eaten by the Shimano pad. After fitting the Koolstop it stabilised and didn't deteriorate.

Koolstop is hard to come by and Cape Cycle Systems don't seem to appreciate the gem of an agency they have here.  If you can't get Koolstop here, get it online. If you can't get it in the shape to fit your brake shoes, change brake shoes. If you can't get brake shoes, change brake systems.

Get it.

Good Advice JB - Koolstop salmon/black combo pads found, purchased and installed.

Much better than the previous XTR pads, good performance and no noise even after 15 minutes of non stop downhill abuse.

Memo to self: Next bike will have discs just cause I hate fiddling with V's..
