Yesterday my wife and I (along with our extended cycling group) went for a long training ride in the Cradle to prepare for D2D next week. Along the way we came across:

A super bike rider who had discovered that his bikes capabilities exceeds his own by a very large factor. It seem's the brain donor crested a rise out side Teak Place and failed to notice that the road curved to the left. He then proceeded directly to the scene of the accident. His bike took out a cevron sign and came to rest around 30m off the road.  Not to sure if he was OK or not as the firebrigade where leaving when we arrived. However I'm glad to report no cyclists where involved.

Can't say I feel to sorry for this brain donor. I just hope the rest of the super bikers will get the message and stop using the area as a grand prix track.

Just a little further down the road just after the Rhino and Lion park we came accross a gentleman tangled in the wreckage of his bike. He was in a fairly bad state and had taken a huge knock to the head. He had absolutely no short term memory and had no clue what happened. He must have asked 5 or 6 times if we knew what happened.

I think what had happened is he had hit a water bottle lying in the road. With the help of a guy by name of Kobus, we managed to get him up. Phone his family and Kobus took him home. Form there is wife took him to the hospital for a check-up.

I tried calling last night to see if he was OK, but there was no reply. I hope he is OK.

After this long post, there is a point to the storey. It was very, very difficult helping the guy who had crashed. He had no short term memory and minimal long term. It took ages to get his home phone number out of him as well as his wifes name. You need to carry some form of ID with you like IDE ID.

If Kobus is on the hub.  Good on you for stopping and giving this guy a lift home, as well as calling me to give me feedback. Nice to see there are still good people around.

Mark, I absolutely agree with you,

This is not the first time a nasty/horrible motorbike accident has happened on the route.

It is by no means an easy "track" and these absolute mullets put everyone's life in danger with their antics.

The JMPD can make an absolute fortune setting up a nice Sunday morning speed trap there...

Yes I agree having identification with you while cycling is a necessity.

ICE id is by far the most convenient way to do this IMO.

When I had my crash I was in shock and somehow thought I had my cell phone in my shirt's back pocket and when the people assisting me could not find it I realised it was flung out of my pocket when I crashed into the car.

The Telkom Satelite route is also a Grand Prix course for the crotch racers,  someone is going to become a cross on the side of the road, because of there inability to control the monster they are riding.

Why don't they go and to track days and learn to control the monster,    o yes I forgot that costs money.............  you just spent R100 K plus on a motor bike and you cannot afford R200 for a track day.

Good luck to all who decide to live on the edge

Sundays in the Cradle can be f*** frightening, come around a corner and a bunch of those idiots are racing using both side of the road. Why doesn't JB Metro do road blocks there? None of them have plates for obvious reasons.

I've seen motorbikes crash there a few times and don't particularly feel sorry for them.  I am also very glad that no cyclists were taken out in the process of him wiping.

as a biker i have to agree with you guys. i fail to understand how R5-600 for a track day can bee too expensive when you're willing to spend R80000 plus on your boney. also, another thing that drives me ballistic is the j-4sses who have all the Berik/DMD/Arlen Ness gear, but their poppie is sitting on the back with a strappy top, 3/4 length pants and sandals. ffs, if she doesn't want to wear the gear than she shouldn't be allowed on your bike. i am a girl and i happen to know for a fact that there is very nice girly gear out there.

Have to agree, my wife helps me remember to put my ER24 SweatBAND on when I ride (which is every day). there is nothing worse than the thought of your loved one being out there and no way to help if something does happen. Dirty Twin can give a lot more info on this as he organised it for me.

Instead JMPD set up two road blocks yesterday that must have netted a fortune. One on Main Road and one on William Nicol. I got stopped at the one on Main Road while taking my kids to Montecasino skate park. Spent 1 hour on the side of Main Road paying R800 to not go to jail. I had one R500 fine on which I had apparently missed a court summons and they added R300 for contempt of court (I have moved home twice in the past year so assume it went to an old address).

I'm all for enforcing the law (my kids were peeved at losing an hour of skating time though), but think it needs to be consistent. Would JMPD set up two huge road blocks like that in Alexandra. Never! They target the people with a fixed address, credit/debit cards (that's how most people were paying their fines) and a submissive attitude. One taxi driver they stopped just shouted at them and told them he had never ever received a summons for his R1000 fine. He drove off minutes later after what must have been a 'misunderstanding'.

Back to this topic though, how on earth do you think they're going to catch guys on motorbikes for speeding? They don't have big enough number plates for the camera's to pick up and cops are certainly not going to step into the road to try and stop a motorbike doing 200kph...

Can't stand the crotch rockets, they scare the living daylights out of me with those crazy speeds they do. Once saw an oke bite it on a corner near Harties, horrible - head-on into a car cause he took the corner way too fast. An ugly way to go and believe me, no-one wants to see the mangled bodies, it ruins your day.

I also lost my younger bro Leigh to motorbike crash-related epilepsy16/09/2004. I miss you boet.

I love the one on the corner of Summit and Bryanston Drive in the afternoons....

They must make thousands every week catching soccer mommies talking on their cellphones....

AND ... its nice and close to the Sandton Police Station - so they don't have to drive too far to get their work done.....

On our way out to van Galens 2 weeks ago I had my bike on the rack behind me. The bike wheel sits slightly out from the car and we came across the breakfast run crowd (I believe tequila in an integral part of breakfast). The bikes were coming towards us and overtaking traffic and as a result were zipping between me in my 2 tonne landrover and the oncoming traffic. I was terrified that one of them would catch a handlebar on my bicycle wheel.

For ID I am thinking of having a card laminated with all the info which I keep on a lanyard around my neck

check out sweatsafe. they are coded, and your medical details, etc will be available to medical responders. there are different packages, which offer instant hospitalisation cover.

ice id is also useful. a lot of info is contained on their bracelets and other products.
