A quick question' date=' would anodizing the aluminium nipple prevent it seizing with a steel spoke?[/quote']

A quick answer: No.

A slow answer: No, because anodising is a electrolytic process like chroming and cannot be applied to the inside of hollow vessels. In other words, the hole inside isn't anodised and if it is, it is not done properly. So, the nipple is red outside but silver inside.

Guys ? I really learned a lot today, thanks! Especially, as I just came back from my LBS and nearly bought a pair of Mavic. Will consider going the hand-built route.<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I am looking for a pair of weekend racing wheels. Any advice?

good value for money would be either a set of american classics or bontrager race lite aero's or if you are able to get a pair a set of Ritchey WCS alu wheels(very under rated)

well not exactly, It can be applied on the inside bore of a cylinder but usually its not because the inside bore usually has to fit something inside and anodising changes dimentions in a less than controlled manner. If a precision (ish) fit is needed then anodising that surface is not recommended. I always specified that the inside bore of rocket motor casings were un treated for this reason and also adhesives don't adhere well to anodised surfaces.

Anodising would not prevent seizing though, in fact in most cases it promotes seizing! Hence the seat tube of anodised frames is not anodised but thompson seatpost are anodised inside and out.

PeterM,

Easton EA90 range is worth a look and the price is excellent.

Or you could what I am doing. Buy the hubs, spokes and rims and build them yourself.. :)

trust me, just finding the right bits and pieces is half the fun. The other half I still have to learn

I invited my good friend and owner of the Ksyrium wheel in question to have a look at this discussion. Here's his comment:

Dear Johan and Sprocket Jockeys,<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Following your interesting debate on my beloved rear wheel, a Mavic Ksyrium SL Limited edition 1903 - 2003. (with the Yellow spoke -"Yip")

Every one has much to say now that the rim has fatigue cracks, of course it has cracks, what would one expect after 24,000km with a fat cyclist (88 minus 3) bouncing along for about 960hours, ?The wheels still work fine by the way, this is just some preventive maintenance?.  Mavic nor any other wheel manufacturer has never put their rims through this type of intense testing.

When the rims were first launched it was the best thing for cycling, ?wow what technology? ?yuslike?, now ? oh what crap wheels you have?  ?shame when are going to Upgrade?.

Hooray for Mavic, an accolade to them, good publicity and marketing sells wheels, not the unbreakable discus some people expect.

At 24,000km Lance A could have ridden all his record wins in each TDF on this set of wheels only, ?suck on this.? (Excluding the time trial distance ?different wheels)

I have been cycling for 20 years and experienced a few bad rims, but none have ever done this distance without a single problem, I think they are OK wheels and look good on my BMC.

I must however state that Mavic SA could do better ? their bright comment was   ?We don?t actually sell spares for Mavic wheels older than five years?   Which planet did you say?.

Yours in Cycling,

Miles Simpson.

well I do 2nd his comment on the support of the mavic wheels locally. It is shocking bad. Hopefully the new Agent will do a better job than the last did. Even the brand that remains withe previous agency is poorly supported, a matter I have taken up with the honcho's in europe onmany occasions. Sadly the local crwod ahave a job for life  :(

so it's poor service till kingdom come, let hope it comes quickly.

If you are a  weekend racer, don't treat your bicycle like a teenager treats his first Corsa. What's wrong with the wheels your bike came out with?

BTW, what do you call one of those souped up Corsas? An acne mobile.
