I needed a spare set of brake pads for The Bull and could only get a "resin".

From what I understand, Metal will last longer but Resin will give you better stopping power.

Anyone tried running different pads in the same caliper ?

I honestly dont see the advantage of running different pads either side of a caliper. What exactly are you achieving.

My reason for running resin at the front in dry conditions is that they actually bite better and they are much quieter. I have my old steel ones which I slot in if its going to be wet.

In the same caliper !!! I.E resin on the left and metal on the right ? WTF would you wanna do that ? It sound like a very easy and quick way to break your bike

Yes in the same caliper but resin on the right and metal on the left Wink.

Heard of it being done but don't know what benefits it gives.

Metal based pads are the best.

In fact metal based pads and resin pads are very similar in that the both have a resin substrate that holds the brake material in place. Metal pads have less resin and metal as the braking material. Resin pads also have a resin substrate but an organic compound as the braking material. The organic compound is softer and less dense therefore does nto handle heat very well.

The Technical Manager of Shimano europe told me that the reason the bike are shipped with the Resin/organis pads is because it's cheaper for the manufacturer to buy in bulk and it's lighter so th ebike feels lighter on the shop floor.

Koolstop, Swiss Stop, and few others have denser organic/resin pads wich last a little longer than the std pads.

Metal/resin is still best

As i see it the resin pads should give better stoping performance but will wear out faster, ok in the dry . The metal pads have slightly less stopping power but will last longer especialy in wet conditons . Be carefull though some manufacturers specify the type of pads you should use i.e some shimano rotors should only be used with resin pads and magura say if you use non magura pads in their brakes you void the warranty.
