Where are you guys staying the night before the race?

We are thinking of roughing it up a bit and camping at the start, if it's possible.

You can stay in the boarding house at the Underberg School. They were filling up the dorms already and were about to overflow to classrooms and then a marquee. They supply dinner (and breakfast I think) and a matress for about R200.00 per night. You will be about 500m from the start line.

Phone Margie on 033 701 1012 and see what she has available.

Stay as close to the start as possible. We stayed at Sani Pass and it took forever to get to the start. Even camping is better as long as you dont have to drive.

I think an important part of the preparation has been overlooked. Day 2 is long and can be very hot like this year. Do trial runs of your hydration and eating. You might be fine at 5 hours but then bonk with an hour to go and there is still another day to the finish. Remember to eat and drink regularly even if you are not hungry or thirsty. "You eat for tomorrow!"

Geez.. maybe I did a different race, but not much training required?

You can expect to spend an average of 7 to 10 hours in the saddle on day 2 alone... I would think that a bit of training is required for that Confused

It was interesting to see how many teams didn't finish in 2007.. most dropped out on day 2

My advice to average riders like myself (and not super human's with natural ability that don't need training) is to train as much as possible, get used to climbs (like Breedts Nek) as often as possible and have a little respect for the type of distance, ascent and temperatures that you will encounter..

I'm sure one can ride it without training, but it just won't be as much fun! and the point IMHO is to enjoy it!

A lot of the items listed below may seem like overkill' date=' but they do not take up much space & you can share the load with your partner.

On the ride, Spare derraileur cable, gator (Use a car tyre patch), cable ties, duct tape (wrap around seat post), quick link for your chaim (In fact carry a few) & make sure your multi tool has a chain breaker. Day 2 in particular could be epic & in case you find yourself stranded with injury km's from a water point, carry some big plasters or bandage, super glue & myprodol.

In your overnight bag, carry a spare tyre & some spare spokes & a decent spoke tool. You should be able to borrow a chain whip & other tools for removing a cassette, so I would not bother with these in your overninght bag.

And don't forgot duct tape to hold together your partner's frame!

The Myprodol and big plasters would have been useful.

On tyre choice, take the fastest rolling XC tyres you have.

If it rains, you are walking anyway.

Seriuosly I raced both Sani and Non stop sani with a 2.4 Vredestine killer bee on the front and a Geax mezcal 2.2 on the back (The other friederstien would not fit into my frame its so big.) run at 2 bar the low rolling resistance is the bomb.

I did however cary a set of Nevegals in the balck box along with my pillow and caby ruby. and I checked the weather each evening to make sure.

EARPLUGS!!! This is the most important piece of equipment. Its amazing how many people snore and those tents are only mm away from one another.

After a few "sleeping pills" starting with a "C" I don't think I'll be needing earplugs, I'll be passing out.Smile

Look at the weather forecast just before the race - 3 years ago it was freezing for the first 2 days, and there was rain - if there is rain, take break pads, and mud tyres
