eagle : as far as i know (I might be speaking out of my butt)' date=' there is no test for EPO in SA sports, never mind CERA[/quote']

WADA specifies a set of tests to be performed on a sample.  The same tests are performed in Paris, Sydney or Bloemfontein.  Our testing lab is rated third or fourth best in the world.

I know they have a lab in bloem, but im not sure about the ability to test for EPO.

have any SA cyclists ever been caught? what about other sports?

would be interesting to find out...

It was announced that the 2008 Peking Olympics urine/blood samples will be kept till 2016 and submitted to the most advanced tests available...

Many heroes could turn into zeros... ditto to cycling...

Damn! Must have missed this. Was it televised?

Listen china, us dutchmen call it Peking.  Oraait?

...and if you don't believe me (or Flemish Lion), read this (OK, try to read it):

De Nederlandse Taalunie heeft een jaar of tien geleden een lijst met buitenlandse aardrijkskundige namen opgesteld. Daarin is gekozen voor Peking. "De Werkgroep heeft als benaming voor de hoofdstad het exoniem Peking bewaard, omdat zij de indruk heeft dat de donornaam Beijing onvoldoende is geaccepteerd."

Positive tests that received a lot of attention the past year were those of 16-year-old cyclist Michael van Staden who used EPO and soccer player Moeneeb Josephs.

bruce.. besides one teenage cyclist being caught 3 years ago (btw - they hardly caught anyone @ the TDF that year for EPO, so i find it mighty strange that he TESTED positive. I think it was an admission, not a test) has anyone else been busted for EPO in SA?

They can and do test for EPO in SA. But not often enough and possibly not yet for CERA. It's all budget related. More funds = more testing. Local Pro teams that really want to make a difference should be making donations to the Institute for Drug-free Sport which is SA's independent drug-testing organisation.

This from a late 2007 news story I wrote:

According to Fahmy Galant, Acting CEO of the SA Institute for Drug-Free

Sport, funding is the most significant limiting factor to there being

more widespread testing, not only in cycling, but all sports in South

Africa.

?We allocate budgets each year to various sports, depending on certain

factors such as the risk levels and the doping history of that sport.

For 2007, we allocated R345000 to cycling.?

This figure is relatively small when one considers that a standard drug

test costs approximately R1800. Add in the R1500 test for EPO (a blood

oxygen booster popular in endurance sports) and you have R3300. That?s

only 150 standard tests and 50 EPO tests. There are more than 1000

cycle races on the annual calendar, excluding track cycling and BMX

racing.

Cera ' date=' hematide and epomimetica all used to treat cancer patients......am i the only one to see a link to the sport's most famous cancer patient.

What the? Are you insinuating that King One Nut doped?

Ahh... thanks sean!

have they actually caught anyone? where do they get funding from? R3300 isnt that much (330 euros) so why isnt there more testing @ TDF?

If you want your team to ride tdf you pay for 19 dope tests * 9 riders up front. problem solved.

Nice idea, but the teams will not do it... They all have doping specialists on the payroll... sorry, that was supposed to be anti-doping specialists and in house testing regimens...

Peking? Whats next Parys? These Dutchmen twist everything. Just 'cos they run rugby they think they can.

On the topic at hand, Wits Centre for Exercise and Sports Medicine has been appointed to do the testing for the 2010 WC. ANyone know what levels of testing they do? Apparently one of their main reasons for rgetting it was their proximity to Joburg Gen.

then they dont ride... its not like the organizers wont get teams to fill their spot. In total its around 56000 euro's (willehond - whats their annual budget - you posted it the other day) to test every rider on your team for the duration of the TDF. The teams can fire their doping specialists (who are getting WAY more than that anyways).

Look at whats happened in the last TDF. Barloworld wanted to/is going to end sponsorship because of doping. How many other sponsors want to pull out because the riders on the teams they sponsor are being caught, and the sponsors name is now associated with doping.

I reckon if you added it to the bill the sponsors would go for it. Whether or not the team managers/doctors would go for it is another story.
