Training in the wind = hills??????

When we went out this morning ..... remember we only have one very flat road to cycle...ie out and back with the same road, no hills.... zilch nada........ the windsock position at the airport was blowing like this.....

The windsock position indicates 20 mph which is 32 KM/h.

Would riding into a headwind such as this help for hill training?????

If not how will we do hilltraining????? We only have the tandem here so training on a indoor trainer will not help.

Coming back was like downhill of which I never complain!!!!!!!!

I was going to suggest mountain biking, but then I remembered you're in Angola...Confused

I reckon riding into the wind regularly is effective in improving strength, which can help with climbing but won't replace the value of training on climbs.

Training into the wind is basically the same as training on a climb.  In the end you have to turn the cranks at a higher than normal power output.  Climbing doesn't exert any additional forces than riding into the wind does.  The only difference is that you can take it easier into the wind and on a climb you have to keep pushing, so if you can keep the power up when riding into the wind, you will get the same workout.

In the end it's about the power you put out, not the terain you are on!

Big H, here it is from another experts mouth. Why do I know cause I live in Dubai and the biggest climb is over the highway. Cycling is about turning the legs around and making sure your heart rate is correct. When you ride flats you pedal the whole time and when you ride in hills you pedal for approx 60% of the time. Simple maths. Also make sure your heart rate is correct and you will get nice and fit.

The climb is a mental thing and its just about getting your mind around going uphill again. The legs and heart will get fit on flats.

Belgium = Flat - many World Champions

South Africa = Hilly - not one World Champion

Just keep pedalling and enjoy the tailwinds when they are there.

Uhm, Belgium ain't flat (try Googling the Ardennes an you'll see), but I get your point!

I agree with your reasoning though.  It's all about power (and it's derivative: heart rate)

Don't mind me, I am just giving you a hard time because I picked all the climbing races in Belgium to do!

To support your theory; Steven Rooks lived and trained in the flattest part of Holland and won the polka dot jersey at the TdF!  Robert Gesink is also a mean climber who grew up on flat roads.  The wind definitely makes up for the lack of climbs.

And Big H' date=' if that doesn't help, there's always EPO CERA ? check how it helped Ricco and Kohl's climbing...

Does it work for old overweight and unfit cyclists...... althought a certain hubber does not regard me as a cyclist.

hills usually end after a while and you can recover' date=' the wind just keeps on blowing.[/quote']

...but you can turn around and get the wind behind you!
