I love Song origins stories, and today I learnt about this incredible story I had to share it.

Nothing Compares 2 U

Prince was busy with a period of recording songs and was ferociously writing songs. At the same time is young housekeeper Sandy Scipioni was away with her family because her father had had a heart attack. He had a great relationship with her, which was not romantic. At the time he was in a relationship with someone else. During these recordings he kept on asking "when Sandy coming back?" until one day he went off frustrated and wrote the lyrics to nothing compares 2 U about her. He then sat down and recorded all the instruments and vocals..all in a few hours.

The original recording was never released and only ever heard by one person, Paul Peterson, lead singer of the Family, who recorded the first version of the song. Of course, Sinead's version made the song famous and into the multiple lists of the greatest songs of all time.

The theory behind the reason his original version of Nothing compares 2 U was not released was because it revealed a side of domesticity for a young man living on his own. But that is all speculation - the fact is the song remained unreleased or unheard.

When Prince died, there were rumours of a vault in his house containing literally thousands of songs that never saw the light of day - not because they were bad, but because he was very picky. He apparently had no will but requested that his vault remained sealed for 2 years after his death. 2 years later and the first song to be released was nothing compares 2 u.....

just listen - even more incredible considering this was written and recorded in a few hours.
