20081027_033658_Battaglin.JPGHi.

I'm thinking of selling this Battaglin (see description and pics below).  What sort of price should I be looking for?

Frame: Battaglin 56cm, Oria alu tubing + alu fork (threaded steerer).

Wheels: Mavic Open Pro, 105 hubs, 32 Sapim straight guage spokes.

Tyres: Conti Gatorskin

Cranks: Campag Chorus 53/42

BB: Campag Chorus (square taper)

Shifters: Shimano LX Rapid Fire 9spd

Cassette: Shimano 105 9spd 12-25

Rear Deraileur: Shimano 105 (from 9spd group)

Front Deraileur: Shimano Ultegra (from 9spd group)

Chain: KMC 9000

Brakes: Shimano 600 EX (single pivot)

Brake Levers: Shimano SLR

Bars: Cinelli

Stem: Some Jap alu job (quill)

Saddle: Sella Italia Octavia Genuine Gel

Seatpost: Zeus alu

Bar Tape: Deda

Mechanically, the bike is absolute perfection.  I am a bit of a freak when it comes to bike maintenance.  All bearings are perfect, bordering on frictionless.

The bike is a bit heavy by modern standards (about 10kg I guess), but it makes up for some of this by being extremely stiff.  It certainly feels like there's no power loss to flex when pushing hard, however unscientific that may be.  I'm comparing it to my Litespeed Antares and my Colnago Extreme C.

Ideas, please?

old Alu frames lack in resell value, as alu does become fatigued.  Some of the components may border on collectable.

If it was steel with no rust however........

Nice old bike...I'd say maybe R3k? Maybe less? You'd have to find the right buyer though, not everyone appreciates old stuff like that but some okes do love it. I for one would definitely like to get hold of a Colnago Master steel bike with downtube shifters etc. Imagine riding that around, bet it would bring back some memories....I had one when I was a kid, I could ride that thing for 80 kays on my own at an average speed of above 40. And I grew up in KZN where there are hills...

That Oria tubing is seriously over-engineered - I'd put large sums of money on it not failing in my life time (which would be pointless, since then I can't collect on my bet anyway).

I was more thinking of selling it as a ridable bike rather than a collectable bike.  Despite having a Litespeed and a new Colnago (carbon), I still ride the Battaglin on long training rides if the weather looks suspect.  Except for the weight, it really is absolutely as functional as any modern racing bike.  It's great for long rides in the howling wind here in Cape Town, since the weight keeps it stable and the shallow-section rims don't catch the cross winds too badly.

I'm thinking of selling it to a family member, so I need an objective ball-park price, which I'll then apply the standard family discount to.

You guys are too sweet!

I think R3K is too much, personally.  Don't be nice just because I'm a psycho freak who spent hundreds of hours building and maintaining this bike.  I won't take offence and hunt you down with a chain whip - I promise.

...  It'll be one of those big old-style headset spanners.

Most guys cry when they realise that their love and joy is almost worthless.CryCryCry

Especially when it was the best of the best only 6 months ago.

Dont sell it keep it

I agree............I doubt that you will get more than a few hundred Rands for it.

Have to say I agree... Would be a shame to let this go to someone who won't necessarily appreciate it.

Having said this - and without dissing your family - why not consider popping it up on EBAY? You'd find similarly minded freaks [WinkTongueEmbarrassed] who would do their nut for those components and that frame - and appreciate the bike for what it is - i.e. look after it...

PLUS, the added bonus is that you could double your price, since with the Dollar/Rand exchange rate being what it is - it would cost them nothing...

Just a thought...
