Tires for sabieX

Deep Section

Recommended Posts

I am doing the sabieX for the first time towards the end of the year. Could anyone advise me on what type of tires   I should go with? (I am not after brands names but rather the type of tire for the terrain). I have decided to go tubless.

Thanks smiley1.gif Deep Section2008-11-03 03:21:02

I did the pre-ride with Conti mountain kings and they were perfect. Rolled nice n fast and gave perfect grip on climbing and descending in the dry and the wet conditions...

I used Kenda small block 8 and also found they handled the wide variety of terrain - loose rock, sharp shale, tree roots, soft sand, hard pack and mud.  Tubeless is definitely the way to go - just make sure you choose tires with strong sidewalls.  You don't want to slash a tire at the top of Hartebeesvlakte (always a possibility).

mountain king's will be alright for the time trial would be better if you could get something mud specific for example the Bontrager mud X

also there is a lot of mud at the sabie experience so tubeless is a good idea but dont forget the mudguards

Thanks for the advice.I have been seriously considering the Kenda small block 8. My only concern is loose gravel on the climbs and mud (if there is any around at that time of year?)

Small block 8's and mud will be a disaster. Try wet rocks and cornering with them too if you wanna perfect crashing your ass off.

I perfected that already but in my case I doubt it's a tyre issue .............. Ouch

But then again if it rains like it did last year' date=' tyre choice is immaterial.

thats why i have two sets of wheels smiley1.gif but if you dont have two sets of wheels take two sets of tires it takes me less than half an hour to change both tires if they are tubeless
