Depends on what colour scheme you have on the rest of your bike, I suppose.

 

Red nipples, would go nicely with red Hope Pro II hubs and ZRT Olympic rims. Blue nipples would go nicely with my Anthem 1.

 

Alu nipples are lighter than brass, but arent generally as good when it comes to durability of the wheel, but I am sure you knew that already...

Aluminium nipples - the only ones that can be coloured, seriously compromise the durability and longevity of your wheels. Avoid them unless you know the risks.

The risks include a complete wheel rebuild when your wheel develops a wobble as well as extra labour costs (or if the builder doesn't charge you more, he is definitely not doing the job properly) when working on the wheel anything from six months after the build.

 

Alu nipples also limit the tension you can put on the spokes, which is required for wheels with 28 or less spokes. Even then, when building with alu nipples, you have to budget for three or so extra spokes because alu nipples gall onto the spoke and the spoke has to be cut and destroyed in order to remove it and try again. Some spokes cost R30 each and treating them as sacrificial parts is not something I like.

 

In my view, aluminium nipples have a role to play in reducing wheel weight but comes at a price many times their worth.
