LOL maybe I should start my two weeks of tapering?

Seriously, I'm a bit bushed after 50km on the MTB today (First real MTB ride in 1.5 months...!). So, before driving all the way out to Alberton for an early ride, I'm rather going to sleep in tomorrow, and M-A-Y-B-E go to the gym for a bit of cardio training (Actually, tomorrow is a running day)

Be safe on the road tomorrow, and make it a quality session!

Hey you all.

So a few of you are having a go.

1st question (GO2): Who nominated me for the cool cucumber award ?

2nd question (Nuwbie): I now ride in the social group ?

3rd question (Nu;GO2;S2L): Why did you all go short on Saturday ?

S2L, you'll like this.

On Saturday I went long and on that freaken hill (Walkerville/Lido) I got dropped, I think I was last ~ WTF ?

So I figured well here goes a 60km loop on my own, I caught up to few guys who had also been dropped but they cheated instead of turning right after the hill they carried on straight (Shawn was that you on a red Trek with USN kit ?). Anyway I turned right and the group was nowhere in sight eventually I saw these 3 guys all on Bianchi's - caught them but they were talking about going for coffee so I knew they weren't going to help we turned left onto that sand road and right back onto the tarred road and I saw another 3 guys, it was time to say goodbye to the Bianchi boys and off I went, now I had the group in site. I caught up to the 'new' guys and we chaced the group and CAUGHT them. It took me 9km to catch group but I done it (I'm getting quick hey, ok I know the group is getting slower - I told you guys last week they were getting slower). Was I glad to have caught the group, the wind was howling on the way back to the steps and the guys were motering into the wind, I was 4th in the line and the 3 front guys were out to see who was faster, did I have to pedal to keep up & to keep the gap closed. When we got to the bottom of the steps there was only half a group - it seems those carbon bikes can't keep up smiley36.gif. Now for the steps, well the avg speed was about 31km/h (GreyOwl I'm catching up to you best to do some more secret tranning smiley2.gif), I've never gone up those steps so fast and the wind was still howling. Just after the garage I got dropped again but now I was almost home so it was ok.

Nuwbie, so that was the social groups ride for Saturday, I think you should join us this weekend.

So what's happening on Friday ?

Who's riding and were to ?

Racman, are you also one of these slow guys that climbs on the bike and rides at a cool 45km/h ? I've seen the pic's of your stealth, it looks fast.

Hope you guys enjoyed the ride... I decided to spend some quality time with my MTB.... I suffered.... all this road riding is turning me into a softy smiley2.gif

Today was just one of those days that you wish never happened. It was such a frustrating ride.

First of all my "mates" dropped me this morning ' date=' so there I was waiting at Steers at frickin 5:00 this morning. No one pitched , so I went back home. Nice ride 10k's!!

Decisions, decisions - back to bed, or do I go to Xumbugs at 7:00 to see who else doesnt have a life?

My butt and everything else froze on the way to Xumbugs, but there was a moerse big bunch of guys and gals - shame.

The softies set off (as Nance pointed out), and Owl warns that its gonna be a fast ride - looking at the guys there I think to myself - well you've taken the first step to brave the cold, might as well go all out then hey. Soe serious guys and hardware there this morn.....

Going up the Lido hill was by no means an easy ride into the sunset - lets just say I measured it at between 26-30k's. Anyway from there the ride just turned pearshaped with a lot of indecision as to where to turn etc. The bunch basically concertina'd the whole way, Owl left us just before the Circus and headed home, at Klipriver the bunch went left, I decided enough is enough (softy again), and headed straight up the steps. Crossing the river I introduced myself to a guy who contnued straight with me - turns out its Nish4. Good day mate - we actually had a chat on saturday's ride already. Took an easy ride with him up the steps, and ended up doing just a tad over 93k's. Not bad for a monday morning, me thinks.

Those who missed out - you softies.[img']https://assets.bikehub.co.za/legacy_images/smilies/smiley36.gif[/img]smiley36.gifsmiley36.gif

Nuwbie, so that was the social groups ride for Saturday, I think you should join us this weekend. - You be we can do that on Sat, but if they drop me then you take me home on yr wheel. (O goodness, maybe I just need to admitt I am a bit scared)

So what's happening on Friday ? Racing @ Stonehaven, still undecided about the distance - Mrs Nuwbie's first race, over 10 k's - might just join her for that in stead of the 80, seeing as I have a tough ride waiting on saturdaysmiley18.gifsmiley18.gifsmiley18.gif

Nuwbie, are these your tactics again, pretending that you a softie ?

I want you there on Saturday so that I can hide from the wind - behind you smiley36.gif.

Nuwbie, do the 80km's. Like you said it's a faster training ride & I'm sure the Mrs will be ok. As I told you on Saturday my son won that race last year.

Then on Saturday we can do the long loop with the social bunch (according to you).

I'll go long on sat with you - promise you with the amount of swearing and slanting and abuse being flung around this morning - nothing social about it. I managed a chat or two though, so yes, for me was very social, for the bunch - aikona.

You can suck wheel on the downhills

It looks fast standing still because that's closer to the speed I ride at smiley36.gif.

In fact it doesn't look much faster when I'm riding it either smiley4.gif

Ah, Racman...surely you jest? Its all good dude...fast or slow.

Indigo Kid...I nominated you for the "Cool Cucumber" award because you always have the sleeveless shirt, and never seem to have a hair out of place!

As for this mornings ride...Damn it was cold. I left Meyerton just before 6 this morning to ride through to the start. It was pitch black...but I could see my breath in front of my face...and I even suffered from an 'ice cream headache' on the one downhill!! It was cold.

It took me an hour and 5minutes to get to Xumbugs...where I was surprised to see such a big bunch...which happened to contain OB1! Whatever...

I could sense that there was going to be a lot of "macho posturing" and thats what prompted me to tell Nuwbie it was going to be a hard ride. hen we hit Lido hill I made sure I was up front for any fireworks...but there were none. Then as Nuwbie said, we went on the most "@r$e about face" route I have ever been on. What the hell? I dunno who had the idea of riding down the old JHB main road for as far as we did? Why not just go the back route through the plots? It would have been less suicidal, and would have been a nicer ride.

And as for the guys moaning and fighting in the bunch? OMW! It was funny!

But a nice ride all in all.

Kiwi and I had a good chat...I think he was still traumatised from his race the day before!

There was quite a bit of equipment in the bunch today as well!

Hey GO I had intentions of doing the reserve from the Circus and we landed up sitting in the van for a long while before retiring to the Blockhouse for a Wimpy slapup!! Call me a woes but I don't care it was effing cold....and worse is overheating in the reserve and having nowhere to dump the extra layers..........

OK, I'll 'fess up here... I got the MTB to kinda play along, so went for another ride around Northern Farm.

Did 49km yesterday, and 33km today. smiley2.gif A cool 80km MTB for the weekend.

Rides were:

Yesterday(ad-hoc chain fixes): http://connect.garmin.com/activity/4313548

Today (ad-hoc derailleur fixes): http://connect.garmin.com/activity/4350432

Somewhere during todays ride I got the impression that I'm busy becoming slower, but a bit stronger on the hills... Maybe all the LSD roadie rides I did the past while is busy getting to me? Or is it just delusions of grandeur to want to go faster, coz I am eyeing a time of 2:50 (or less!) for my next 94.7? This equates to roughly 33km/h coz it is more like 91.5km. My first(last year) and only 94.7 was a 3:13 - done on 3 months of running intervals and < 500km of MTB rides

So... a few questions: For the faster bunch, what is the avg speed

1. On the 40km short loop?

2. And the longer loops?

Something more technical:

3. how attainable is a 33-35km/h avg on a compact crank?

The fastest combo I have is 50x12 and I can easily spin at candence of 100, avg 85 cadence on the longer road rides, and know how to share the workload between the legs(pushing larger gears) and the lungs(spinning) ...

Delgado! Dude...if it was cold on our ride, then the reserve would have been f***ing cold. I'm not a fan of the reserve in the cold...and you quickly get sick with all the sweating on the uphills, and then freezing on the downhills (IMO)...so you didnt wuss out bro! It was actually very cold today...wierd considering that saturday was fairly warm.

Delgado...must hook up sometime again soon dude.

Agteros...why do you ride a compact crank? I'm suddenly putting the puzzle pieces together and know where that killer acceleration comes from! Your 50blade! (Very track dude!)

You should be able to maintain quite easily on those gears if you join the quicker group. Come and give it a try...

Ox  - the ave on the short loop doesnt differ much from the long loop. It depends on the bunch, the mood they're in and also the weather (wind)

Fastest ave for the short loop I've ever been part of has been around 34k's

Normally it would be around high 30/31, maybe 32.

The longer rides can hurt a bit, but its not always that fast. Round about 30 or so.

When ML, Darryl Impey an Nic W is there  - which seldom happens, its much faster - and of course when Slave joins its hectically quick - up the steps!!
