Where do Stolen Bikes Go?

What is happening to the bikes that are being stolen? Surely the bikes are too high end for them to go unnoticed. Are the criminals riding them or flogging them off? If so (cyclist who are buying stolen bikes) are creating a market for stolen bicycles. Ironically they would be putting themselves in danger of getting the bike stolen from them. Alternatively if the criminals are riding around on these bikes questions need to be asked of them.Where did you get that wonderful bike? could we see a receipt or something.

Surely something can be done to curtail this problem?

Valid questions and here goes one more: when buying a 2nd hand bike, how can we make sure it is not stolen?  It would be nice to have a stolen bike database with serial numbers and other info.

A couple of times I've seen a non-cyclist type riding a red GT full susp mtb and a Fox fork makes it not a R599 Makro special

I want to keep this thread focused so that something can really come from it. Seriously where do these bikes go? It's not like other stolen goods is it? It is a limited community and it shouldn't be a human rights issue. If someone was selling a paraglider for dirt cheap then question would be asked. Same thing here. If you see someone with a bike that was obviously created for a hobby or a race machine and was now being used as a commute( with no helmet) then surely questions should be asked. Again anyone know where these bikes are going?

often stripped i'm told.  had mine swiped in jan; and without starting a fingerpointing hijack, a few sources said there are bike chopshops in the cape flats.

As for buying stolen goods, if its too much of a bargain then you know why. I can't imagine how hard it is for someone like Avron to decide what's legit. I've heard talk of stolen bike databases mentioned for ages. I'm surprised neither of the bike mags have started an effective one that requires police case #'s.

edit:

even mentioned here

Short version, they end up in dumps and rust away of steel frames like mine, or just rotting away if alu.

Long version, they go into townships and get ridden into the ground because the theif who sold it to the comuter for R200 has gone on to steal more bikes, and the poos sod who bought it cannot afford to fix it when stuff breaks, so they ultimately get ridden without tyres until they are completely stuffed and then end up rotting away somewhere like a dump, bush in the veld.

I could see that happening, the answer is probably more simple than we like to believe. What a waste man. and people get shot for that...

A mate of mine had his gary fisher sugar with race face /xtr stolen from his bakkie abot a year ago. The other day he was on the way back from Jonkers when he noticed his bike(could only have been his as he built it up and all the parts were sourced seperate) he went straight up to the guy (no european) told him that the bike belonged to him and that its now going to be his once more, he ripped the bike from the oke and told him to eff-off..

He got his back.. lucky guy, the way he did it is questionable, but to have to go through the whole paper shlep... I would do the same.

The cops would probably have found a way to prove that the bike has been with the other persons posession for to long and then put my mate behind bars.. haha, Many beers were had that night and the Gary was his once more!
