Attakwas suffering!

Now that still stays the hardest one day race in SA. Route today a lot harder than last year. Rocks, sand, dust everything.

5 riders under 6 hours. Francois Theron, Evans, Cordes....

Another about 35 inthe next hour. Me 7h06. Started too fast, blew, recovered. Girls Ischen, Sam Oosthuizen, Erica Green(7h00 with her epic partner Willie Engelbrecht, both had punctures)

My epic partner about 20min behind me so at this stage I'm safe. Dick, you better leave the beers alone. Saw Marius halfway, rode with him for a while, heard somewhere he may be doping, but I told him its not true, cause he rides to *** to be doping. Ha, ha.

Sounds like a great race! Hopefully with the introduction of Ultra-marathons ? 100km?plus we'll build a new generation of classic races and develop more world-class marathon riders. May you rest well today, Groot Lem...

It was a great race. I was at the 4th waterpoint today - just out of

Bonniedale. Francois Theron went past 6 minutes ahead of Evans with Paul Cordes in third. Francois Theron in the end held out for the victory by three minutes.

Ishen Stopforth was alone in the front of the womans race after Yolande de Villiers broke the RD hanger on her Vulcan. Ishen won comfortably in the end.

A lot of people came by later on who I thought would never finish and they finished in good time. This has to be one of the toughest races around.

i heard it was work not beer that was to blame for his lack of enthuisiasm

Nope, you dont get a beer belly from work. I thought it was a beached whale when Dick took off his clothes in Oudtshoorn the night before! So can one lose 8k's in 8 weeks?

Al I can say is EISH, dis can like to be a very hard race, we even came across a puffader going up the Attekwas, that was the fastest I have ever excellerated up a mountain, anyway this race was a lot harder than I expected, and I expected it to be hard, I cramped the last 60km which meant that I could'nt go hard on the climbs but I still managed to get to the finish, having left my ego in one river crfossing after a fall and my pride in another river crossing with another fall. Good fun though.

I agree - EISH - one hard race, the route this year was definitely tougher than last year, lots of SAND and ROCKS - espcially when you lose half your nutrition in one instant - My bottle cage snapped off with an almost full bottle of Perpetuem in it down a bumpy descent - the bottle cracked too so most of it was lost to the sand and rocks.

Weather was nice for most of the race, overcast and relatively cool, not too much time in the hot sun. Waterpoints were awesome as they were last year, just as well with the work they make you do just before you get to them - it seemed like each waterpoint was preceeded by a steep or technical climb.

I thought I would cut my time from last year - this was not to be - I ended up about 1/2 hour slower. I definitely need to put in more training for the Epic.

Definately the toughest race I have ever done!!Ouch Wanted to quit after 70km was so gatvol and my body was so sore.. But tought if I make it to the end I can also say I survived the Attakwas. Waterpoints were GREAT, stopped at all of them, filled up my camelback, had 2 cokes and a snack and went off. I still managed under 8hours. Heeha!!!Tongue But dunno if I will ever attempt it again....Dead

Thx GrootLem, that hurts! I was only looking so K@k cuz I was "pacing" myself ... it's actually harder going slow than going hard but I think I might have gone to slow for to long. Embarrassed

Should have gone with Dick's bunch but I thought they might go a bit to hard for me. Anyways, was not that hard, actually thought it was pretty easy race, no really hard parts expect for one downhill section.

Don't get me wrong, it was hard in that it was SH#T A$$ LONG. I did start to Cramp after about 115km's. Damn, I was feeling so k@k at about 118km.

Me and one other bloke caught up to Samantha( 2de place lady ) and she was pulling one guy along and not before long she was pulling me and the other chappy along towards the end.

I thought, "No f#cking ways" I'm letting her do all the work, so sitting 4th wheel I got out of the saddle to accelarate to the front only to start cramping again, so I sat myself down and just tried not to get dropped using the one leg. After a while I came right and went to the front.

Have to say, I saw her last doing the Stellenbosch race and she looks like she lost a few killo's and looking really strong!Clap

Waterpoints was 5starts again this year, reading all the comments about the waterpoints I have to say they lived upto the high standards they have set for themselves last year, well done ladies and don't for get the guys lubing out chains!

Gu's, Koeksisters, Banana's, Watermelon, Spur Burgers , Coke, PowerAde, you name it, I'm 2kg heaver today....thx...I think... :-P

anyways, wanted a sub 7 and got it, did how ever not get my top 20, so will have to go back next year for that!

A DNF, mechanical, already gave my spare hanger to someone at 1st WP then bend own RD after tumble in that "maalkolk" holes after the 1st WP. (twice in 10 meters actually Embarrassed)

Very disappointed with the none result Ouch (not the event, was perfect)

Was mentally fed-up with "sukkel" & walking at 2nd tar crossing & phoned the missus to rescue me.  Never had so much mechanical issues on a single day.

Was a testing route and excellant organizingClap

A very disappointing DNF for me too, but not mechanical. I think it was the toughest day ever on a bike for me, started the race nursing a strained achilles which I had been resting before the race (in hindsight I should probably not have even started). By waterpoint 2 I was already in trouble with cramp, possibly as a result of trying to be nice to my left ankle. I struggled on until number 4 before finally throwing in the towel.

I will have to give it another go next year, I don't like unfinished business.

Great organisation, especially the waterpoints. Thanks to all involved!
