I think Brandon' date=' Max, Jacques and Kevin ? and even David ? are going to surprise you this year...

How? By boxing in all the races?

Who said anything about boxing? On a bike you don't need to box to make a point. Nah, they'll actually all race more international events this year, which means they'll have more opportunities to shine. I see Brandon's lost 5kgs in the past couple of months which will definitely improve his climbing - previously, his weakness... Jacques is pure class and I think has a bigger future in MTB than road, Max is only 21, Kevin and David are super-focussed ? expect possible win at Trans Alp from them (Epic is too technical). All to be top-20 finishers at Marathon Worlds, with at least two in top 10.

Just my opinion...

The only reason I started the thread' date=' is because of similar thing happened to my son about 2 years ago at a mountainbike race in the Border area. At 40km an hour, a rider   elbowed my son off his bike and out of the race, resulting in severe knee injuries and R2000 damage to his bike. My other son also experienced a similar incident at a National XC race a few years ago when he tried to pass the leader up a hill. He landed up in the bushes. Luckily with no serious damage and only a few scratches.

I know tempers may be short, you are tired,  there are lots of money and sponsorships and pressure involved, but that does nor justify the behaviour of both riders, involved in this incident. CyclingSA should take a stand and try and prevent future incidents like this, to protect other innocent riders.

I think CSA already took a stand by disqualifying Brandon. As someone said earlier, this happens from time to time but riders just sort it out among themselves. Usually, the guy with the poorest bike skills comes off second best. I'm not condoning conflict, but this is mountain biking, not tennis...

does mtb'ing have races refs as in other forms of cycling? or do the offiials just wait to see who emerges at the finish first. ifso, how do they follow the race? if not, how can any rider protest at another riders riding conduct if there are no race refs?

Crap man. As Sean says this is not Tennis and its called racing!!!! Sure in the mid pack where we NOW ride to just have fun, different story and you should look out for fellow competitors. In the front you are there to race and give it your all. When you are being harrased by another rider in any form you have to stand your ground and show him you're no pushover (Excuse the Pun!!). Thats what makes a person competitive damn it!!!! For ever and ever cycling has had those hard men that we all aspire to be like one day.

If you think the likes of Robbie McIntosh, The Beneke's, Tony Impey, Eddie King, Dave Wiseman etc who are all very nice guys, were there to have tea every ride out then you have no idea about cycling whatsoever!!!!

Maybe tennis is better for you too. Oh and dont tell John McEnroe I said that. We miss his temper and antics. Its good for the show.

They should both be disqualified. It's a race, and rules should be made and enforced. However, if it's not a race and someone does that, then they deserve to eat dirt. Look at surfing; if you go and knock someone off their wave you'll get your lights punched out, plain and simple.

All in all though, hearing this is poor form, and it's exactly why I couldn't give a rats ass about ever riding a race. People become so obsessed with winning and glory that they forget about the spirit of the sport.

Don't know why there is a tendency to paste KE and MTN and jump to BS (BS?) defence. Sometimes the one to post a note explaining how it wasn't their fault tells a bigger story than the one who doesn't. I wasn't there, so how would I know.

But, does anyone remember the ephedrine thread? Just saying.

STM, do you actually know KE or is it only the local guys who are so awesome for you? I think you will find him a very modest individual.

I thought mtb'ing was about camaraderie and pushing yourself in a beautiful setting. This weekend changed that. I do many sports but have never seen fellow sportsman go out of their way to be nasty and degrading. Im not a top mtb'er but am really passionate about it. I taped a goo to my top tube, cause its easy and makes sense. Mr Tissot on a new S-works rides past and tells me im all about show and no game, and rides off ahead. What do some cyclists get out of such comments? He wasn't the only one to comment about my silver adidas shoes and taped on goo. I start slow, so went on to beat him by 10mins. In the same race (Paarl 49km), my mate broke his chain and walked 10km's before somebody stopped to help him. The person who stopped wasn't even from SA. It left me with a bitter taste towards cyclists

Putty - so you imply that it is OK to take somebody out when you go mountainbike racing.! Thats what i make from your comments.

If all riders are allowed to act like hooligans, then we can just as well stop mountainbiking racing and just have fun rides with beer in our Camelbags.

Using drugs and EPO will then also be fine to take, because who cares!.

Thats why we have to level the playing grounds my friend - it will allow everybody to take part on an equal footing without fear of been taken out by selfish riders.

Wow ok Brandon being called the queen ok thats a bit harsh judging by the fact that he is actually a brilliant rider and he was always under Kevin's shadow last year so now that he is riding for DCM chrome people have issues with his racing i think he had a valid reason to retaliate kevin seriously it is racing and people must understand that if you want to put up a wall you must be able to at least climb it yourself

a similar thing with MTN happened three years ago when christoff won the dome to dome because the whole MTN team turned wrong now that is just rider error because they should have known the route so MTN cried like little girls and they went home with nothing

what happens in a road race when a guy gets switched????? if he gets to the guy who switched him they have words and sort it out on the bike now thats where i think Brandon was right by having sorted it out (or so he thought) while on the bike

but life goes on and welcome to racing!!!!turtlek2009-01-25 07:31:44

Whats all this handbags at noon stuff?

Back 'in the day' ol Barry 'doc' Oertel would've had this sorted with water bottles at 10paces and couple of beers after. I tell ya!

Theres always been a bit of argy bargy with the elbows in cycling, on and off road. It is a part of the racing, but thats just nudges here and there.

Although to actually switch or elbow a rider to the point of crashing, or retaliating likewise is pretty poor character all round.

Thats my personal take on it, as for this specific little fracas, who knows. I may have an opinion and an onion, yet since I wasn't there and not involved, sure as hell wouldn't pass judgement either.

We really should start being a bit more 'HS Thompson' than 'E Hemingway' ... actually, scrap that. *** analogy.

Martelpypie - In My competitive spirit and opinion, when I am racing and someone takes me out first, Buddy you better be either very fast or very strong cause in this instance as you ask, Yes it is OK to take BACK someone out. Actually been done before in 1991 SA MTB champs. Both myself and the other guy riding for the lead just carried on racing and are still mates today. THATS RACING MAN!!!!!

As for the rest of your comments, well I'm sure we've totally flogged those discussions to death on the hub.

PS, Beer in the camelback is actually one of your better comments.
