Spent the weekend in Johannesburg. Saturday morning I had to ride behing a group of cyclists for about 200m while they chattted and rode in the middle of the road. Saturday afternoon I slowed down to pass another group of riders and two of the guys swerved in front of my car without looking! People?are?going?to?die?if they?don't take the?roads seriously.

People are going to die if they don't take the roads seriously.

I get shot down in flames everytime I moan ('cos I moan way too much, dude) about this.

Yes good riddance.

My beef is that our emergency services are so thinly stretched that there's a chance somebody's child isn't getting the help they might need after an accident.

Just to keep some arrogant half wit alive.

wait till spinnekop sees this thread - he's going to tell you all why it is good and necessary to ride like this...

Only in races Slowy......Only in races.....or do you propose you bikers should ride on the left hand side of the road on Kyalami race track when racing???

Speaking of Gauteng...

Did you guys see how many marshals enforcing the rules did not have number plates on their bikes?

Slight hijack....just before Xmas I was on my way back from Jonkershoek (by car) when we encountered three young pro cyclists (all CT locals on upcountry teams) cruising along on their roadbikes.  Never mind three abreast, they were taking up the entire lane.  So no prob, cruise behind them for a while waiting for (a) a chance to pass or (b) for them ro make some room for me to get by.  The latter never happened, and when I eventually passed them, for some obscure reason one of dimwits gave me the finger.  As I was late for a beer I did not bother to remonstrate.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago.  This time I'm on my way TO JH (again by car) when I come across three MTB riders riding three abreast.  Sauser and two others.  They hear the car and zip into single file.  I pass, say thanks and get a friendly wave in reply.  Class remains class, assholes will always be assholes.

actually spinnekop - there are rules on track days and these get enforced - eg depending on which category you ride you may only pass in certain places etc. Wink and yes, transgression of rules results in instant removal from the track

and for the record i do have plates on my bikes. the same way you don't believe in adhering to certain rules and laws and some of us here (including myself) take you to task about it, there are bikers who have the same attitude to rules and laws as you do and they also get taken to task by many people (also including myself) Big%20smile

Although cyclist are probably the only people who obey one of the most important road rules i.e. stay as far left as possible/ / safe! (Keep left Pass right - and the JHB holiday makers in CT never seem to obey this on the freeways i.e. the slow lane becomes the fast lane!)

Is it not time that motorist learn to drive properly? i.e. when overtaking a cyclist indicating and doing it in the other lane and obeying the rule of never putting 2 wheels over a solid white line? Once again been in Europe way to often!

The road are not only for motor vehicles! But for all road users.

Is it not about time that motorist learn to drive properly and respect the law - and that law enforcement officers do law enforcement and not only speed control for monetary gain?

While we're on this topic, does anybody know who is in charge of the development riders who are always on the road in the Somerset West area? They ride in red kit, I think that Pick n Pay is at least a partial sponsor.

I want to contact them because these riders are a hazard to themselves and to motorists. They ride in a large group, often up to 50 of them, and they haven't a clue as to how to ride in traffic. They are p!ssing motorists off and are endangering themselves.

Kevin I have seen those riders a few times as I live in the area and I agree that they are by far the most eratic and dangerous bunch of cyclists I have ever seen, no question about it, especially all over the show on the R44 at rush hour.

Yup, they have no respect. We need to bring their behaviour to the attention of whoever started the initiative. They are doing the image of cycling no good whatsoever.

Speaking of road cyclists..... Saw a dude on the M3 going down Wynberg Hill towards Constantia last week. The guy was cycling down the middle of the left hand lane in 4:30pm traffic. He must have certainly had some sort of death wish, as it's exactly where motorists come round the left hand bend and start speeding up.

I thought that cycling on the freeways was illegal ? never mind riding in the middle of the freeway.....
