NCR Afrikaans names

Ok, so I'm seriously confused...

I deal with loads of Afrikaaners every day, and their names just make no sense! I know names are shortened..ie, "Fanie" is short for "Stephanus"

But there are some I just dont get...

Frikkie?

Wim/Wimpy?!

Flip?

Org?

Koos?

Tobie?

Jampie?

Sakkie?!

Santie?

Kallie?

Surely these cant be names on their own?

I'm just curious to know where they come from...

And why is the 'Book of James' in the Bible called "Jacobus?"...Is 'James' non existent in the Afrikaans language?

my ex brother in law is seamus, which is related to james, i believe, but he had to put "shamus" printed on his business cards because people would call and ask for sea-mouse.

james would be pronounced ja-mus

Allow me to be pedantic here but I would guess that Ja-mis is more appropriate Wink

then allow me to correct you: that's how the jamaicans would say it?Big%20smile

Lived in Malawi & had the variants on my five little letters of:

Errice

Harris

Elvis

Alice

So I settled for "master"; the maintenance manager came up with "my lord" - which was all too funny and far-gone to try to change.  Never sure if he was taking the p!ss, bowing low and sweeping his feathered hat across the floor*.

(*that bit was made up to help the story - there was no hat)
