HELP....CRANK FALLING OFF???

Recommended Posts

Al square taper, Octalink and Isis bottombrackets must be torqued to the manuafcturers specification. If not the will work themselves loose and damage the crank and in worst case scenarios come off.

How does a crank just come off without the cyclists feeling there is play or something amiss....... and after 39km?????, they were most likely not even tightened by the bike shop before they went out!!!!!

FSA.....common!

Mine also came loose constantly!!  Really annoying.

My LBS confirmed there is a problem with the FSA bolts, but apparently there are different bolts that can be used to cure the problem.

I was there when this incident happend.  It happend to a very experienced cyclist and I am sure she would have noticed if the crank was loose from the start of the race.

Yes, she is an extremely experienced cyclist.  There was a lot of talk that Cannondale Holloway do come loose,  but I can find no literature to support that statement.

Thanx guys for all the feedback, much appreciated....

Doesn the Cannondale Hollowgram cranks have external bearings with a solid axle on the chainring side and a loose crankarm that fits onto splines or is it an internal BB like the older types that fits with a crank bolt?????

No.  Not external bearings.

Bearings are INSIDE the frame.

Axle is SEPERATE from the cranks.

"Older types" like Oom says....

Crank bolts both sides.

Sorry guys' date='  the one person had FSA cranks, and the other Cannondale Hellogram (hope spelling is correct),  the cannondale cranks were fitted on the Friday, and fell off 39km into the race on the Saturday, the rider ended up with a concussion, 2 vertebrae moved,  the dr said she was very, very, lucky she did'nt brake her neck. [/quote']

WTF!! is it just me or is it not an exceptionally bad idea to do anything to your bike the day before the race?

Hi Pixie.  Dunno why you even asked the question here as you have the answer to everything else except what you actually asked.  The rider must make contact with the manufacturers and maybe she can speak to them directly as I heard the same story you did probably from the same source. Just do not speak to the sales rep as that will give you even more waffle which you can do nothing with.  I am just glad the rider in question is getting better again and at least moving around outside again.  Myself and my old friend  Backlash just realised how little we know about broken bikes and broken people that day.  backup rider2009-02-12 07:38:21

Oh for goodness sake! Why so high and mighty? Of course there is banter, this is the Internet. However, there are also some very clever and experienced people here and if you ask a question and support it with the right data, such as the type of crank, background circumstances etc, you'll arrive at the right answer.

However, just saying "my car makes a funny noise, what could it be?" is sure to bring out stupid responses.
