Yip, my typing ability aside, I have had all the fun I need for one day.

Time to get out there and ride the bike.

Such a lekker day too. Not to many things better than a good long ride.

Adreneline and endorphins at the same time.

S2L, I have been stopped by an Ehurhuleni Officer one Saturday morning while escorting a group of cyclists on the Lido Route.

He told me that what I was doing is Illegal and that cyclists don't belong on the road. Thay are categorised the same as pedestrians. This, from a Traffic Officer that should know better.

Other road users do not know this fact and have the same sentiment as the cop!!! That is why we need this out in the open whereby all motorists are aware of these facts.

IanJ, you know me well enough to know that I have been the one fighting for cyclists to change their behaviour and attitudes towards fellow cyclists  road users for as long as I have been cycling and more so since starting Sign-Up. As you are aware, most of us are motorists ourselves and drive just as dangerous and wreckless as our non-cyclist counterparts. If you seen my interview on CNBC and I quote ' the only way we as cyclists will gain respect, is if we start respecting our fellow motorists' ' To earn respect, we have to respect others first'!!

Yes my Captain. I agree 100% with you.

Problem is' date=' we already have a right to use the roads. On the other side of the coin, we have dimwits who would deny us that right and even use questionable ethics and behaviour to wipe us out.

I agree that we need to have compromise and forunately ( I think) that brain dead ijits are in the minority, (but hey it only takes one of them ijits to kill more than one of us.)

So we get a petition to the DOT. Then they inform some brain dead motorists that we have rights too. That kind of thing happens once a year around december. They call it "arive alive".

And still thousands of brain dead ijits wipe each other and innocent people out in the annual carnage run to the coast.

I love the idea and salute the notion. Then you get the f****wits on another forum who just wn't see any form of logic. You think DOT is going to listen to us.

That ******wit (See I even talk like it now). is exactly the reason why I think we should have a HUGE protest and hold an entrire city to ransom until the DOT actaully listen to us. We can casue HUGE K@K if we blockade downtown JHB for a whole day. Imagine the frustration levels of brain dead motorists then. We really gonna be popular. Protest I say, protest.

It is not enough to have them hear our grievances, they have to act on ALL ijits who break the law. (Perhaps they need to cull some motorists as well, specially those brain dead halfwits we were speaking of earlier.)

Your attitude is confrontational and of no help.

You speak as if you speak for us all, specifically with regard to the fracas on the motoring site.I can assure you you do not speak for me.

My ex wife and son cycle up and down Ou Kaapse weg on a regular basis and I cringe to think that the guy coming from behind has been aroused by some kneejerking individual on his website.

Instead of inflaming the already sensitive situation try to be part of the solution.

This now appears on their website.

A lot of damage was done on that website by some froth spitting Hubbers.

Just not worth it, the guys on that website date from the 123 era, 1 litre Klipdrift, 2 litre Coke and 3 litre Ford Cortina. It is just scary that we have to harbour lunatics like that within our midst. I just think that all bounds of normality has been overstepped with all the death threats made. Is there somewhere or some body where a formal complaint can be made. Spitting hate like that and makings threats like that must be a crime??????

Guys I am afraid I would have to distance myself from this one. Stooping to the level of these guys is not going to solve any problems and I would hate to be riding up Ou Kaapse Weg next weekend when one of these guys comes up there looking for trouble.

I ride regularly with jmaccelari and I think we share the same sentiments. We need to get our own house in order before we have a leg to stand on.

We train as a group and make a big effort to not inconvenience other road users. This does not mean always stopping at robots or riding in single file but being aware and slowing down and checking robots before proceeding and being aware if a vehicle approaches from behind and the group must then move over. Where the road is narrow we will always ask the group to ride single file.

After our group rides I usually ride home alone through heavy traffic and I think I have a good relationship with the other vehicles' date=' even the taxis. I make an effort to always make hand signals and to wave a thank you when someone lets me into a gap.

Apart from one isolated incident with a drunk taxi driver I have had no problems in the few years I have been riding these routes.

Our reaction to the CarToday thread has done more harm than good.

I am busy trying to get sponsorship money out of motor manufacturers for cycle safety, however, with the attitude flying backwards and forwards it's going to be tricky as they too keep abreast of these threads.

It is imperative that we understand this is not an 'us vs them' battle but rather a real problem that needs mature debate and solutions.

Come on guys, whether or not some petrol head insults you or worse yet, threatens you, maintain your pride and keep your nose clean.

I for one emailed CAR magazine today, cancelling my subscription. I still have four issues left. I told them that my cancellation was in protest of the comments on their messageboard that was allowed to be posted all day long without being moderated, thus these sentiments carries their blessing.

Captain Slow - that is so tipical of a cop.

I still want to see cops pulling people for sitting in the fast lane on the freeways when their is free flow traffic - lets face it motoris cannot drive in this country - it is not that cyclist cannot cycle. The whole education of motorist has to change for all road users sake!

When last did you see a cop pulling somebody off for having 2 wheels over a solid white line?

I think that's definately a more appropriate way to make Car stand up and take notice. ClapClapClap

But not with returned, irreverant banter.

This whole argument is peeing me off! We as cyclist are regarded as "traffic" and that means we need to be recognized by traffic. Which means where entitled to the FULL LANE and cars should legally past on the opposite side of the road or the next lane. But we don't use the full lane, we keep to the left for traffic not to be congested and not to cause havoc on the roads so motorist can past, its the polite thing to do. And motorist should welcome that gesture and not accept it as a must. We are also not legally allowed to ride inside the yellow lane on the "shoulder. But we do, because again, we are polite.

In think motorists should be more patient and tolerant to each other, to motorcycles and to us. If your ever been in the Gauteng traffic you would know what I mean. They should wait behind us, even if we are in singe file or not, and wait for a safe time to past, just like any other traffic. That would be the polite thing to do and I will appriciate it!

A bicycle is classified as a vehicle under the NRTA:

(xlviii) "Pedal cycle" means any bicycle or tricycle designed for

propulsion solely by means of human power

A bicycle (or "pedal cycle" as it is referred to in the National Road Traffic Act) is

referred to. The Act specifically states that pedal cycles (along with all other

vehicles) shall keep to the left and - specific to pedal cycles -shall remain in

single file (Reg 311(2)), unless overtaking another pedal cycle.
