Black_Jack Posted February 17, 2009 Share Hi, Here's the deal. I need to replace my wheelset due to a log which got stuck in the spokes, snapping 2 and bending the rim. Bike shop verdict - replace. Options are: Mavic Crossride - brand new, R2900 DT Swiss 455 - roughly 1 year use, R2200 Voting starts now !! Cheers
Weight Weenie Posted February 17, 2009 Share I don't know the DT's, but eish the Crossride's are like 2,2kg without rotors, cassette or QR's, so I'd say take the DT's if they are lighter and are still in a good condition
Johan Bornman Posted February 18, 2009 Share I won't replace the wheel. I'll replace the rim and two spokes. It's a common repair that's easily done with great success. It is also an interesting experiment. Myth has it that too high spoke tension will pull the spokes out of the rim. Truth is that the rim is stronger than the spokes. They break before the rim gives. droo Posted February 18, 2009 Share I have a mate who has the crossrides, and I wouldn't touch them with a pointy stick. I'll dig up the link in a second. Edit: link dug up https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=41670&KW= [/quote'] I have had Crossrides on my Santacruz blur LT for about 16 months now and the only thing I have had done is grease the seal inside the freehub as It gets dry. I am light (67kg) but I dont ride lightly, Mabe the 5'' of travel helps. Im not saying they are perfect.. but before you go blow your wad on a part mabe the guy In the thread should state If he weighs 100kgs and started riding yesterday... I have not touched a spoke, not even had it tentioned. During this time I have had a bearing overhaul on my frame, gone through a drivetrain, serviced my Fork twice and had my rear shock serviced. I picked the wheelset up at CRC and Payed R1600 for them, Landed. Im my personal experiance, I cannot give anything but praise.

The wheels themselves are not his problem, the freehub mechanism is. I'm glad that you've had no issues with yours, may they give you many more happy miles. But I still wouldn't buy them based on the experiences of some of my friends. Opinion was sought, opinion was given, use it, don't use it...
