I sincerely hope that I don't offend the loved ones of the children with this post, but I want to make a point that is being completely lost on the media and our cycling organisations.

and then ask whether the recent statements by cycling organisations imploring cyclists to ride in the yellow lane are really what is required to reduce cycling/motorist related accidents?

What about the 1.5m law??

No vehicle is allowed to ride in the yellow lane, unless it is an emaergency.  A bicicle is also a vehicle.  One is supposed to ride on the right hand side of the yellow lane and you have a 1.5 m space from the yellow line towards the middle of the road to ride in.  If any car want to pass you it should do so that their is at least 1.5 m space between the cyclist and the car.  This ineffect means that a car must gange lanes when passing a cyclist

It's your responsibility to protect your life on the road. You know how bad people drive and know which roads are more dangerous than others.

Be more defensive and a little aggresive on dangerous roads. It doesn't matter if you ride on either side of the yellow line, it all depends on the driver paying attention and seeing you. I'd rather have a few extra punctures riding close to the curb than getting hit by a car.
