ok so lets say you on single track' date=' which is steep for joe(jo) soap new to mtbing. Steam out the ears, front wheel all over the place. Riding lowest chain catcher, knowing that if they stop, it means pushing the bike the rest of the way cause all momentum is lost.

Now, blokes come bombing downhill. What now ?

Or heaven forbid, the soon to be new XC champion comes up from behind, screaming move left move left, what now ? You battling your little lungs out, knowing you are not in a straight line, trying your hardest to beat this little uphill and if you stop its walk.

Fast youngster upsets middle-aged has-been

Hardly an "incident".

Not like what the police would need an "incident room" for.

or title could be:

Youngster acts like youngster' date=' report claims

Old man claims "but he didn't stop or listen to me" before being led tearfully away by relatives, vowing to write to the local paper.

Just an idea.

I think i should ride my KTM (not the bicycle) down the spruit one saturday morning, and give the non yielders a bit of a roosting......Evil%20Smile

Daft, if it is so easy to deviate from the path then surely common sense would say the decender should deviate - speed is your frind especially when "bundu-bashing" and it's much easier to maintain control off the path when going downhill than when going uphill?

(and no, i look for the excuse of stopping and getting out the way of faster riders with utmost pleasure - i need the chance to caatch my breath.. getting going on an uphill isn't too tough cos i have decent pedals that are easy to clip into)

In my opinion it comes down to safety. DaftVader is partly correct... both parties need to be aware of what is going on around them, and the onus should not only be on the person going downhill. The person going downhill cannot always slam on brakes and come to a complete stop or slow down enough to avoid other riders coming up particularly if you cannot see the trail. When going downhill the noise you are generating makes it difficult to hear other things around you, the person going uphill however...going slower...should be able to hear better.....

Bottom line... be aware of your surroundings and what is going on around you... and just be courtiious to others on the trails.

In my situation because I'm going slower than everyone I usually stop for others whether I am going downhill or uphill. Occassionally MTB'ers pull over for me, which I am grateful for particularly when I am having a great run... and I always thank people that do stop or pull-over for me which ever way I am going.

Hahahaha, nice one Joe Low.

Orval, for an old dude you certainly whine a lot. Firstly, lets clear something up. Just because you ride a bike it does not make you part of some community brotherhood. Nobody owes you anything. Nobody is expected to greet you, move for you or give a t0ss that u'r on the trail.

So what if this Justin guy was blazing down the trail and didnt slam on brakes and do a scouts handshake with you. We all LOVE the downhills, so why spoil it for the guy. Simply keep an eye on the trail ahead, move for someone, they move for you, whatever, carry on the ride and have a nice day. Most of all, just relax, because there are no rules on a public trail. I'll repeat, there are NO RULES on a public trail. It's free for all to use. Now you can go and become a member of the Northern farms board and lay down the iron fist of Orvil's law, banning defectors from the park, but at the spruit, just chill out and be cool dude. Really man, this is pathetic.

Sounds like most things in South Africa hence why the place is such a mess

Orval' date=' for an old dude you certainly whine a lot. Firstly, lets clear something up. Just because you ride a bike it does not make you part of some community brotherhood (sorry I'm not sure what you're on about here....this is an OPEN forum, did I say OPEN? Where cyclists who enjoy what they do, discuss stuff with other people - correct me if I'm wrong?) Nobody owes you anything. Nobody is expected to greet you, move for you or give a t0ss that u'r on the trail.

(Who said I had this list of expectations? Do you see this in my post? As for you believing that no-one gives a toss for me being on the trail - you disclose a rather self centered perspective that says you could too be a danger to others)

So what if this Justin guy was blazing down the trail and didnt slam on brakes and do a scouts handshake with you. We all LOVE the downhills (including myself), so why spoil it for the guy. Simply keep an eye on the trail ahead, move for someone, they move for you, whatever, carry on the ride and have a nice day (I had no time to react - are you telling me this is due to something I did or didn't do? - Huh? I was not the one who neglected to call ahead and warn others around me - how on earth do you logically arrive at this conclusion). Most of all, just relax, because there are no rules on a public trail. I'll repeat, there are NO RULES on a public trail (then you're obviously so unaware of your surroundings you missed the Ride boards posted at the most popular entry/exit points to the trail?). It's free for all to use (Agreed, and these guidelines are to ensure the enjoyment of all). Now you can go and become a member of the Northern farms board (is there such a thing? I'm sure my post count here is under 20 - I don't sit around bumping up my post count with personal attacks like this) and lay down the iron fist of Orvil's law, banning defectors from the park, but at the spruit, just chill out and be cool dude. (perhaps you missed what I said or didn't read my post at all - I'm not for mandating anything, or denying anyone from the enjoyment of their ride, I would like to see more "incidents" of behaviour that reflects a better attitude to other cyclists). Really man, this is pathetic. (And really bust-the-whatever, maybe you should buy a roadbike, shave your legs, take banned substances and swear at everyone who gets in your way, because your attitude stinks, and maybe you'd fit in better elsewhere)

[/quote']

 - its funny how the really good cyclists are so diplomatic and polite when passing backmarkers in a race as I have witnessed in the early days of the Sabie Classic - its the middle/back of the elite pack wannabees like this dude above who have the abusive attitudes, and who leave their gel wrappers all over the course.

Not all riders race Orvor. you're right,it's an open forum, and I gave you my opinion. You can say what you like, diss roadies, whatever noob. do I care, hmmmm let me think....nope. I don't race, and I certainly never throw trash on trails, in fact my Camelbak always ends up stuffed with other's trash when I get home. Don't speculate.

Now, Orvor, what did is come here and whine about what you think the rules should be. Some old, unfit, 2 years out of the saddle has been who now thinks he's got the right to stop people on the trail and give them a talking to. GET A LIFE!

...and do the signboards at the Spruit ACTUALLY say that people riding uphill have right of way? Or does it impose a speed limit? I doubt it. I might be wrong though because I dont actually live in that cesspit you people call home, but here in the Cape we just ride and have fun. Nobody whines on the trail, we all just have a laff. bye bye

I am not trying to mandate some sort of rigid adherence as there are always exceptions, and why not let others doing a quick descent have some fun, but hey, please call ahead, or ride off the trail where possible, don't expect others to physically jump out of the way!

I'm not a mountainbiker but a roadie and that seems a very civilised request.
