Looking at changing from Trigger shifters to Twisters, Apart from the 1:1 Ratio that SRAM gives that is the obvious benefit what would you recommend. Currently have Shimano XT want to change to X.0

Two similar tools for the same job.

Why bother? You have fine shifters as it is.

The 1:1 ratio story is just hype, there's no benefit in such proprietary systems that are compatible with nothing other than their own.

johan' date=' would you agree that twist swifters are more of a headache to maintain?[/quote']

SRAM XO on two bikes, 5 years and 4 years long. ZERO service except cable change occasionally.

I love them because:

They're cheaper

They don't clutter my handlebar and there'es nothing to knock my knuckles against.

Uh, that's about it - they do weigh less but who really cares, you can shift a bunch of gears up or down, but not such a big deal.

They do have negatives - not the best grip, they do wear and with sweaty hands one can miss a shift, for 24hr races with 1000's of shifts I got blisters.

ok, they're entry level, but i had endless hassles with the ones on my kids bikes, but shifted (excuse the pun) to triggers and haven't had hassles.

Well, an n of 1 is meaningless, but I think others will agree - the 'newer' SRAM upper end of the range shifters are a whole new ball game. I accidentally and not without hesitation switched to them with previous poor experience like you. Haven't looked back.

I honestly can't tell. I don't work in a bike shop so I don't get the throughput and exposure bike shop guys get.

My point was simply that the shifters he has are fine, nothing that the others offer will make such a difference that you have for fork out several hundred rands for them. Put the money in your pension fund.

I have some Shimano twist shifters on my Giant fold-away travelling bike and they give me blisters on one of my fingers - can't remember which - when I use it all day. But even so, I won't change them to trigger shifters. A little blister isn't worth the hassle.

Do you just want to change shifter or the whole gear system? Because you can not put XO shifter with a Shimano derailleur. You need their, I think, Rocket shifters to work with Shimano's 2:1 ratio.

Talk to Kiwi, he is bringing in some other brand that is compatible.

Mampara I am going to do the shifters and rear derailleur with X.0,  the front derailleur will keep Shimano with X0 shifters, the front derialleur is compatble. Just worried now with the comment of Spinnekop with that mud.

Then buy the generics that Kiwi will be bringing it. It will be around R300 a set. It's one thing if they don't last, it's another if you don't like the action. I did not like mine, okay it was Sachs back then, because it takes up a third of you grip space so if you want to take a jump or sudden pull up you can accidentally change gears.

I've been riding the Sram 0.X Gripshifters for about 2years now. I can tell you there is a few things wrong with it. First thing is the rubber grip on the shifter wears down till it becomes so smooth it's impossible to shift one it gets wet. The upside is when chain suck comes into effect you have a few extra clicks between gears that might work better.

Had my grippies for 4 years now. Changed the grips just the other day for the first time. The XO has a slightly softer rubber compound so it wears a bit faster than X9. X9 is also lighter if that matters to you.

As far as reliability goes, these things are bomb-proof. If you open them up you'll see why - there's pretty much no moving parts.

Regarding the 1:1 vs 2:1 debate - with SRAM you have a little more play before you have to worry about adjustment. Not a big deal either way.

Front shifter is nicer than Shimano because you can trim position easily.

The gear indicators are nice and accurate. You can see exactly what gear you're in by looking at the shifter - no need to glance down at your rear derailleur and take your eyes off the trail. Not sure if Shimano indicators these days have numbers now, but my previous XT thumbies had an indicator that was pretty useless.

I have the X0 twist shifters. Done lots of races with lots of mud, rain, dust, etc. No problems. Wished I had them fitted much sooner. Swopped the grips with Ritchey foam grips. Perfect.
