Hi

I know this is "late" to be asking advise regarding the Epic, but this wasn't in my plans...... Smile

I was asked to ride by a friend who's partner had too withdraw due too a viral infection that has been causing him problems and even hospitalised him! We have done the substution and I'm entered too ride!

With regards too training I know it's too late to do anything, so i'm just sticking to my current program and gonna put in a 4-5 hour ride this weekend!

My actual question is regarding tires, gels, shoes, and anything else I would need too make it through the race?

Any and ALL help will be greatly appreciated

Thanks

You can ride 4-5 hours, so you don't really need to train to ride

the Epic. You'll go in undertrained, but get stronger as you go.

My advice for the day:

- do not race, no matter how good you feel.

- ride from water point to water point. That'll give you a maximum

of 25-35kms per ride. The zero your trip and ride again. It's

a mind game. If you can't ride 120kms, you can ride 4x30km.

- do not race, no matter how good you feel.

- stop at each water point (not for long if you want to). Fill up on

water/powerade. Have a munch. Do this at every watering point.

Do not skip, no matter how good you feel.

- do not race, no matter how good you feel.

- remember you eat for tomorrow today. Don't skimp.

- do not race, no matter how good you feel.

Other advice:

- go tubeless

- the part of your body that takes the greatest strain isn't

your legs: it's your arse. Get good cycling shorts and wear a CLEAN

pair each day. Use a decent chammy cream. To recover after each day,

I showered asap, applied Assos shammy cream to my butt (or anything

anti-bacterial/soothing) and wore shorts - no under rods - to allow my

butt some recovery. Don't talk to good looking girls.

- rest as much as possible.

- don't worry too much about spares. Get what you need to the day

on the road. If you need anything else, haul out the credit card

  and don't ask the price.

Oh, and finally:

- do not race, no matter how good you feel.

doing the epic this year for the first time and i must agree that all the hours in the saddle really gets to your bum.

For me anything under 5 hours, my bum is fine.  go over the 5 hour mark you do get sore and tired and some chafing, no matter which saddle you use and how used you are to it. mine is 2 years old and i still suffer at 6 to 8 hours in it.

So use chamois creme. lots of it.

also dont change anything in your diet (in race and before and after). so if you use gels, keep on using them and so on.

make sure your shoes are worn in and fits well and you have walked a couple of uphills in them.

we are starting to taper from this week for the last 3 weeks to make sure we do not start overtrained or fatigued.

other than that make sure your bike is in tip top condition at the start.

If your partner is the Duracel bunny - give him a klap now and every day before you start off - don't try to race it! That said, you have to ride at a pace that will let you finish at least an hour before cut-off. Decent bib shorts are a must! Melksalf werk!

And tell your partner not to use too much, there is nothing worse than riding behind some guy who is frothing from the pants.

I think you should race.

Whether it be your bike, a chick you found in the race village or some tannie handing out melted barone's.
