"That these retailers believed they could act together to increase prices with impunity is shocking.  The Commission intends to thoroughly investigate this apparently blatant attempt amongst competing retailers to collusively raise prices to unsuspecting consumers."  (from the CC's news release)

Hey Ben, best I can do is - "It ain't necessarily so" (as the song goes).

....but it might be.

& are they calling Hubbers "unsuspecting consumers" - that's gotta hurt.  We're very suspecting, I mean suspicious, and thought this all along.

The most amazing thing to me was that AM & co got a whole lot of people into a room (I assume) and said, and this is my paraphrased version: "hey guys, let's form a cartel - whaddaya think?"

That has to have been one of the doffest most naive moves I've ever heard of.

How can they not have expected a backlash!?

Some perspective on the margins quoted.

Retailers work on margins nor markups. Margin is:

Profit / Selling Price

Therefore on bikes:

35% margin increased to 50 % margin means that a bike that costs R10 000 to purchase from the wholesaler moves from R15 384 to R20 000. A 30% price increase.

On accessories:

50% margin increased to 75% margin means that an item that costs R100 to purchase from the wholesaler moves from R200 to R400. A 100% increase in price.

Is that fair? It sure as hell makes me jealous.

Not sure how your math works but eg: R100 + vat + 50% = R171. Whereas R100 + vat + 70% = R199.50. ???

OK. whats the maths equation to work out the above figures, just so I know the dif between margin and markup.

Shew. That's quite a strongly worded statement from Mr Shan Ramburuth. To me it implies guilt before the investigation has even begun...
