A mate's CRC order was shelved this morning with this comment: you need to do Formal Clearance on a SAD 500 with SARS through a Clearing Agent as the value of the parcel exceeds R500.00.

This is going to make CRC shopping a little less fun!

was wondering when they were going to enforce that - it has been the rule for quite somtime now. For about the last year they have only been doing that when it was consigned to a company, not an indiviual.......thank goodness I'm a customs clearing agent......

Rock: Apparently there is a new law that states that when you buy gear from overseas you have a "gift limit" of R400 or R500 per year. If purchase amount exceeds that you have to clear the goods personally from customs.

I spoke to customs yesterday and they advised me to rather get a clearing agent as any mistake on the forms or procedure will result in a fine and a lengthy delay. They charge R250.

I've had to go through the whole process on my last order. Hopefully gear will be cleared today.

then you have start getting the counries of origin for all the items as they are entitles to fine you R500 per item that has an incorrect country of origin declared. say you put GB but when customs open it up and your race face handle bar says made in taiwan......busted!

then they're going to force you to register with customs as an importer (its free, just some few forms to fill in) cos you can't import more than 3 times per year in your persinal capacity

perhaps I should post my rates for cape mail customs clearing and help out some hubbers.

Hi Rock, I would like to buy this for my boy's second birthday:

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Images/Models/Full/24346.jpg

If the purchase price is 945.11 and postage is 327.41 is it:

(945.11+14%)+15%+327.41=1566.44.

Is that right?

I had a customs nightmare last year when the same (SAD500) sh*t happened to me...

A client sent some restoration work and accidentally declared $5000!!!!

About 7 trips to PE... R1000 for the clearing agent, over R2000 VAT (after realistic values were motivated) a temporary importation permit. When I exported the items after my restoration work... I had to go to SARS again 3 times before I got the VAT payed back to me...

So much for democracy and the freedom to trade...
