Did the first shop buy bulk and have stock left over from 6 months ago or was the price stickers put on by some casual staff and marked wrong. It's happened many times before. Dont always think you are being ripped off.

If you look at:

http://www.moneyweb.co.za/mw/view/mw/en/page99

Rand/Dollar over the past years has moved from R8 to R10, that's 25%.

Rand Euro, from R10 to R13 - 30%

problem is that there were some spikes & importers could have caught them wrong & bought Euros when it was R15 (November 08) - that would be 50%.

But there is also some over reaction...

As a small bike shop owner it is very disturbing to see these allogations being made. Because, unfortunately the smaller shops are going to be affected by the actions and greedyness of the bigger shops. What is there to do.....End of the day we are being dictated to as to what prices to sell our wares or lose the agencies for such.....

Fair.......I think not.....

I am sorry if I am going to say something that has been said already.

I agree that prices are becoming ridiculous and I fear that cycling is going to become to expensive for me.

Now reagarding price increases.

I know that the folloeing material prices increased considerably over the last year including Butyl, aluminium. Then there is the fuel price that affects the shipping cost.

The second thing that affecs the price of the item is volume. the more you buy the cheper it gets. so to speak. Since South Africa can't really compete with the volumes of america and europe this make a big difference

With the volume game comes lower margins and lowerprices, and one of the reasons why CRC can sell stuff so darn cheap. (there warehouse is the size of 4 rugby fields I hear)

So bad news is for the SA public, especially those with limited budgets. . .  its only going to get worse

CRC isn't that cheap.  Had a look at buying some Vision Tech and SRAM equipment and its cheaper locally!

Got a new 2009 frameset cheaper from CycleLab than what I could have gotten the 2008 model from overseas (R&A were best priced).  Plus now I've got local support.

If your store is ripping you off, then u have 2 choices, confront them or go shop somewhere else (another LBS or internet).

Are you accusing the wholesalers of forcing you to sell at a particular price? If so, you should phone the Competition Commission.

Well, I went to get some Formula oro brake pads at Fritz Pienaar. Last october they cost R180, last month they had increased to R320.00

Hows that for bizarre mark up, not even 5 months.

Prices on the whole have gone up... Bare in mind that the international distributors increase their prices AT LEAST annually (manufacture costs and material costs) and at teh same time, the rand has been shot to hell...

I agree, the prices are getting REALLY crazy, BUT you can't blame the "price fixing" issue on that !!! Nothing that was discussed was even implemented!!! Take you head out the ground!! Do a little research!!

Absolute crap. If these increases in bike parts is all above board and justified due to rand/dollar exchange and annual distributor price increases, then why haven't my motorbike parts, and even whole motorbikes increased the same? They are also all imported bits, and imported bikes, and they are pretty much the same. In fact the brake pads I use now on the play bike (Carbone Lorraine) are even cheaper...

Big guy q (dunno if it's a q or a g) why don't you get your head out your bum and do some research, instead of these unfounded and frankly antagonistic claims you are currently making.
