Me first, ME FIRST!!!

Maybe somebody can explain this to me (which btw is not unique to MTB):

So you have ~700 starters for a race in one batch. Hectic to start out with. You, and some others, line up when requested by the announcer as not to start right in the back. The narrow starting grid fills up quickly and people start pushing in from the side instead of filling from the back. Despite numerous pleas from the organizers people just continue doing it, resulting in a even more chaotic start than usual.

No my question/s: Why the F*CK do you HAVE to start in the front if you are not racing, nor have a hope in hell, for the price money? What make you think that you can sit and stuff you face till the last minute and then push everybody around to get your fat body and 50K carbon bike in front of me and everybody else who have been waiting 20 minutes to start? Only for me to pass you on the first incline when it sounds as if your triple bypass is going down the drain.

Let me make it clear - I do not have an issue if you and your lard filled lycra is in front of me by virtue of the fact that you lined up first. I also do not have a problem if you come from behind and pass me to finish 30 min before me. I have a problem with you side loading Angry

Correct,  I have actually seen a guy pass his bike over the fence at the Argus and then proceed to climb up and over to get a position in the front at the start of his G group

No hope what so ever, in hell or in heaven. This is why I do not insist on side loading when I pitch up late. I go to the back and pass those that I can and let those that can pass me. If an elite rider wants to line up in front of me I have no problem since I won't be seeing him/her again in any case.

Maybe your missing the point here?

I agree with your sentiments side loading, just disagree with the generalisation of those that do it.!

Wink In spite of my frustration I had a good race. Actually the 'fat' is more of a metaphor since there were loads of them doing this - big, small, old, young, fat ,skinny, male and female. My frustration has more to do with the actual starting process with these people pushing in front as soon as the gun goes causing others to swerve, brake and all sorts of dangerous maneuvers.

The way some cyclists behave when they get to a race, specially at the starting pens is just absolutely pathetic and very annoying. I battle to see the reason for trying to line up in the front, IF YOU KNOW YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO STAY WITH THE REST OF THE MORE SERIOUS RIDERS, but you still want to be there - for the thrill it gives you, or what I dont know but it pisses everyone who doesnt do it off soooo much.

At Argus I can understand the wannabees trying to get their faces on TV, beacause that is probably the most they get out of a race anyway. Its also bad manners, to arrive late and push your way to the front, from the side - as they do, but sometimes even from behind???

We are always so understanding, and in times of need the hubbers have proven to be very helpfull etc, but this is a major concern to organizers and a bone of contention for the rest of us.

The thing that makes me cross is that these guys who do push in at small races are just cheating themselves more than other people because not only do they not have the mental ability to stay with the guys in the front they have the attitude of SO WHAT.... It is a typical south african way of thinking

just a bit of trivia for all those interested, when Jp pearton has won a race he has not led from the gun he has started mid pack keeping sight of the guys leading and when the time was right he pounced on many unsuspecting prey

So to all the side feeders out there if you really want to feel good about yourself and ride a good race try do what Jp does and then see how good you really are!!!

I ride slower when I'm leading then when I'm chasing. I like to have goal in a race, even if it;s just overtaking the guy infront of me, and then the next one, and then the next one.

I agree - The organizers are also at fault. Yesterday at the quickie the announcer was saying don't do it, it's dangerous etc... then what happened - someone shouts go and the pigs push in from the side. Mr or Ms Organizer, Put up barriers, stop them in their tracks.

On that note I saw one of the well known teams riders doing the same, climbing the fence and starting to the left of the arch - just to get a front row start.

Wanna start at the front - get there first.

I really feel for the organizers. They really tried their utmost to prevent this from happening this weekend, announcing every 15 seconds as people start grouping on the sides etc. The only way to prevent it is by policing, which needs people and since it is not a kindergarden I would hate to see it come to something like this. Years ago when I was still on the road they actually did this at PPA events where guys would stand at the side and pull side loaders out.

OK now I feel much better Big%20smile

These side loaders also irritate me tremendously!! The reason why you only see them at the front when they side loading is because it takes so much effort & energy to push thier way through the bunch to the front, they have nothing left to perform !!
