Hi all

I have a question about training..I went for my first club ride on Saturday and boy it was hard...the question I have is when you train do you use gels like you do in a race ie 1 before you start and then 1 every 45 minutes ? the club ride is 60km...I have just started out again after a years break....

Kevin if you have to use gels in a club ride then it is really a waste of your time to take them on race day a simple carb drink and maybe an energy bar will be sufficient enough to get you through a club ride unless you are a beginner trying to duke it out with the mclean train and pavlov express racing club rides

Use water.  Don't waste your money on gels and stuff on training rides.

What club did you ride with?

Blood sugar gets depleted after about 2 hours ... so no need for sugary stuff for rides shorter than that. Just eat (in moderation) within the hour after any exercise...

Yup, couldn't agree more.

If you're also trying to loose a few kgs through the training, it's not going to be helped by using gels etc.

Kevin, which group did you ride with from CL ?  They have a number of groups and possibly you chose one that was too fast. Perhaps go down a group until you are comfortable with the pace.

LOL I started with the D- however found myself unprepared and ready for the hills....*just starting out again* The pace was perfect and the camaraderie was brilliant I could hold the pace no problem to the 20km mark however I was worried I could not go further so I turned back to be sure I could complete the ride comfortably....will give it another go with a good breakfast this weekend and see if I can stick it out for the full 60 this time...

I don't use Gels in training either, however I did experiment with different brands, etc in training before settling on a particular one for race days.

I wouldn't recommend wacking back a Gel you have never had before in a race. Hence what I am saying is follow the good advice provided  by others regarding eating. Breakfast is key. However you will need to try some Gels before you hit a race, so you don't have any unpleasant surprises on race day.
