I went on a group ride yesterday. Now it's not that I feel unfit, I normally ride 20k's a day, just as a means to an end and 60 or so on the weekend.

Yesterday I could not manage 9 k's, I felt as if I was going to die, my HR went to 189 normally my highest is 180+-.

Is there any tips I can get from you guys, to get fitter? Yes I am a bit overweight, but not obese as yet.

I just felt yesterday that I was giving my all and I still could not complete the route, I turned back and managed only to do 12k'sDead.

Is there something I am missing as a vital role to my fitness levels? Some days I can do my 20k route in under 45min and other days I struggle to do it in an hour.

What gives?

Eish...

I have the same problem. I am also looking for the same answers.

I ride everyday, but some days I can only manage 5km. It is odd: I feel good when I head out on the road, but after that first short climb (riding slowly to warm up) I seem to hit a wall!

Any suggestions would be great!

Food!!!

I have a plate of baby potatoes, already cooked, in my fridge. When I want to snack in the evening, I grab one of those. Also have a Berocca when I get up for my ride.

Gels and other supplements are best left for races....

two things i find affect how good i feel, one the first 5-10kms are the worst and fell terrible while trying to warm up (sometimes think i want to turn around) but after that it gets better, and skipping breakfast or not eating before a ride is a definite no-no

Assuming you are healthy and not coimng down with something...

This group ride, have you done it before recently?

Your normal rides, how fast do you normaly ride them compared to the group ride?

Perhaps the group were riding to fast for what you are used to.

To improve you need to add some variety, harder / faster efforts into your training twice a week and ensure you give your body chance to recover by taking a day off from training once a week.

I do feel as if I coming down with something, although I am not sick, just got the sneezes.

The group ride was a first, but the pace was not that fast, was a mtb ride on dirt road and some tar.

I just felt really terrible, I ride with cytomax and water. I dont use gels when I train.

I do try and do harder efforts every so often and on those rides I feel tired but good after I get back.

Could it be that I am just over tired? I do sometimes work till late in the evening/ early morning. Maybe I should take it easy the rest of the week and try on Monday to have a pedal and see how I feel.

Tend to agree with fandacious.  Has your resting HR increased over the past few days?

Not sure, I have not monitored it for a while. I will test tomorrow morning.
