I pitched at a mtb race with my ss a while back. Numerous people offered me their old parts to fix my bike. Idjits...

I'm gonna do that and use the bits to build myself a jump bike...

No front brake? Typical BMXer...

For Dirtjump- Its all good, but wait for that steep slippery trail with the drop of at the end and youre going to come of second best. oh wait that reminds me of a story..

So me and my Partner in crime is looing for some stuf to jam with our DJ / streetbikes a few years back.. we were scouting out campsbay, the backroads had manny little drops to fakie and drop off. so anyway as we get bored we start pushing up the hill.. halfway up we see a nice trail going between the houses(steep as sh*t but BOS Isnt scared of nothing- right) anyway, so we start pushing in that general direction..

I get to the top first and point my ship over the edge of the pavement(no helmets, no gloves, tight jeans, slippery street tires, a back brake and flat pedals..Im off, the trail is steep and after 5m I realise theres no stopping this is bombing it oldschool style, take it in our stride.. so im going faster and faster the trail runs onto someones backyard I shoot across the  driveway and go next to the house where the 45 degree slope carries on (I am long passed fast) as I go passed the house the gradient flattens and suddenly theres a sprayer and 10m of grass left before what looks like the end of the earth (now you try stop on wet grass, no front breaks and sneakers, as I tap the brake my bike goes sideways and i end up approaching the drop on my arse, luckely I stop in time, as I stop I realise my mate(was on my wheel at the top) Is also going to come down here, so I emmediately shout drop!!(this all happens in a splitsecond and I look around barely a second after touching down to see the guy flying down the slope and eyes the size of scourcers he opts to just bail, but he hits the wet grass with the finesse of a truck Jacknifing across the N2 on hospital bend as he cartwheels acros the lawn, Im thinking oh sh*t( the drop would lead to a story drop into the forrest and pinetrees everywhere. as he comes down on his knee he penetrates the grass and pegs his knee into the grass up to his balls his face whipashes into the wet muddy grass with a thud.. this all hapenned in 2 seconds and he comes to a standstill about a meter from me, already laughing histerically.  we wernt even on our feet when the door of the resedents opened up, a couple of bokkies comes runningou out asking us what were doing on their property(stoopid campsbay chicks) I explained that they built their house in the middle of our trail...

Oh hell I start laughing all over, I think my mates last words before bailing was something like Oh sheester!! but they have been burnt into my mind forever...

Long live the stoopid memorys.

Not pointing at any one's rig but it does look like it's just a bunch of armgat cyclist don't have money to fix their bikes. smiley4.gif

It doesn't need fixing smiley2.gif

It was cheap (almost free), rides nicely, gets me to work and back.... and I'm not killing a 27 drive train in the process.

I'd buy a really nice s/s if I had cash lying around. But I also have a BMX, 27 spd h/tail and a DH bike to maintain.

The plan for me was to run both brakes. But the SID(with v brake mounts) fork that I have, has too short a steerer... as mentioned earlier, I am not going to throw cash at this bike and buy a disc brake for the front. It's just for commuting, I know the route and ride with caution.

Don't worry dude, brakes are counter-productive to the pedalling effort.

I managed to get my chain tension right with vertical drop outs!!!!smiley17.gif

The first thing I had to do was get the gear ration correct witout using (ordering) a half link. The blade is 52T Biopace (oval) which I've seen being used on fixies (believe it or not) so wanted to try it as first option.

For now I left the cassette and used the 15T sprocket, but it needed a half link to work, so I tried the 13T... it worked!!!

Although I took the bike out for a 30k spin without issues, the chain still had some slack.

I proceeded to use a small round file to give me just that extra bit of play in the vertical dropouts which worked wonerfully (see before/after pics). It was easier than I thought, but also bear in mind that these dropouts have plenty of material which can be filed away without causing structural weakness.

So no need for an eccentric hub ($160!) for me!!!!!

I now just need to decide whether I'm going to use a track fixed hub and rebuild the wheel, or just jam the free hub and take the cassette appart.

Will keep you posted...

So this is what Cannondale's '87/'88 dropouts look like. See there's no "horisontal" play to tension the chain. But there's plenty of "meat" around those suckers

After some carefull use of a round file I've managed to create the horisontal play required to tension the chain

Drive side reworked (sorry for poor pic). It gives me that extra 2-3mm for chain tension. I could make it more but in this case it's not needed20090615_020925_IMAGE_319.jpg

Some paint work to be done on mine, but rides beautifully!!

Brakes really help on a steep downhill, even if its just mental... smiley14.gif

This would be so nice. If only we had them in this country.

Plenty of them around London... but I still prefer the idea of converting an old frame (maybe cos I didn't have a spare 700 pounds for a Plug, or enough space in my luggage...)
