I am goeng to play sqaush for a few months so time on the bike outside will be less.  Was thinking of getting me a roller for indoor/ anytime training. 

Would like to hear some comments from guys that have some experience with it.  Should I get it it and will it fulfill my needs?Confused

Depends what you want to train. I had a normal indoor trainer, did not like it, was bored to death, swapped to rollers about a year or so ago, much better for me, as you have to balance etc. Lots of people will say rollers don't have resistance so you cannot build power etc. It's true to a point, but then try riding at 40km/h avg speed  for 20km's on the rollers and let me know how your legs feel, or do 50km/h plus 2 min intervals with 1 min break for 20 mins etc. Also your balance and cadence and pedal stroke improves ALOT. And don't worry about coming off the rollers and shooting forward, you have no momentum, if you come off you stop dead, no biggie.

Thanks, that is my need.  Is it true that you need less time on the rollers than outside for the same workout?

I spent some time this morning on my rollers, doing similair to what Daemon said. 20km TT with 1 min sprint intervals thrown in there for fun Dead must say I have a way smoother pedal stroke since starting to ride on rollers.

 

Just one thing - if you decide to go the roller route - don't try and bunny hop off them.... it tends not to end that well Tongue

Dunno about that, I suppose cause it's a controlled environment you can focus on your training more and less on the riding part(cars, peds, potholes etc.) If you time is limited I would say ride the rollers in the week, and do hill intervals on the weekend. Depending on how hard you push yourself on the rollers 30 mins can be a long time on rollers. Fun thing to try is a 20km TT on rollers and see if you can improve your time each time you do it. I avg around 28 mins...hehe I get a little lazy around 15km's in Tongue

Great for keeping you focused while trying to go flat out. As mentioned it will improve your pedalling efficiency and style and is an alternative to the IDT. Like any kind of riding indoors, it's best to put a fan in front on low to get some cooling. Rollers are best done on a track bike fyi!!!

 

Bunny hoping off is possible provided you're not going too fast and you manage to pedal forward to get some momentum to keep your balance on hitting the ground. As is riding without hands but this isn't recommended for n00bs Clown. Always good to put some form of mat underneath to catch any sweat and also to save the carpet/wooden floor from unsightly tyre marks which the wife doesn't appreciate much even when trying to explain the reasons for falling off doing 70kph EmbarrassedOuch

Good, I was going to ask about these. I want to stay In shape during the winter. I should manage 1 hour rides and interval training outside, but those 3-4 hour rides that one needs for real depth.. rollers sound good. as you also keep your core in shape as you need them to balance.

 

which brand should I buy, & what can I expect to pay

I find riding no hands (using remote to swap TV channels etc.) is much easier than bunnyhopping off' date=' might be cause I am on a roadbike not a fixie....going to have to try it sometime on a fixie Big%20smile

did you ever have roller races in sa? we used to and I've competed in them (was very young, didn't get a choiceConfused). It's a rather strange idea, much like racing on grass or a horse trotting track.

 

btw, rollers are great and yes, you can get more out of a short time on these than being on the road.

I have a tacx plastic one, works well, i would not mind one of those steel ones thought.

Buy the taxc roller. Like the big barrel one better than those small barrel ones. Like the noise they make - keeps you going. Train 30 - 45min. Mostly interval. 2min flat out and rest then repeat until you cant no more. stay above 40km/h --

 

Love the Rollers - but riding outside is more fun. unfortunately CT weather is not that good in winter
