It's like that with ALL SA magazine. They do not have the budget to employ full time testers and journos to do a dedicated job. And the distributors are not interested in giving the editor, who became one because he won an essay competition in st.5, a R50 000 to test ride for 3 weeks. So they have to place stuff from overseas mags which is not available here or not suitable for our conditions.

What is even more disturbing is that they are part of the international edition of BICYCLING' date=' thus most of their content is from overseas journalists...copy and paste and add some SA content....I HOPE THEY (Bicycling Editor and his team) READ ALL THIS COMMENTS....I also see that Tim Brink is not the editor anymore....I wonder?????....???? was he maybe demoted because of how the mag has fallen from grace!!![/quote']

he's a member of this forum. why don't you just pm him and ask rather than speculate?

Well, excuse me Roller...as you see I am only a Rookie and do not have 20200 posts, thus I can speculate as much as I can as I do not know all the members...

Guys

You clearly are confused.

The thread was originally about Bicyciling April edition, now I see Ride is being mentioned also as being bad, but earlier on in the thread it was good and much better?????!!!!!

Make up yr mindsAngry

As for the comments on the business related issues eg, budgets, staff compliments, etc. I suggest you get yr facts straight before making such misinformed comments. Not only is it in bad taste, but shows lack of understanding of the publishing business.

I agree with Holy - pm Tim and ask him what's up.

Well, I was not aware that one may not speculate on the HUB, as I saw weeks ago many Hubbers speculating on Cyclelab, FPC, Anti-competative behaviour, etc....

But,I leave it for now and will nly read all your comments....

I cancelled my Ride mag about a year ago' date=' and have not missed it a bit, a mate showed me the current mag and it was laughable. Thinner than Paris Hilton and more insipid.

Not even worth the reduced discovery fee. I hear via the grapevine that Touchline Media is in the dwang, probably the fallout after the group overstated their circulation numbers to get increased advertising spend.

Foe - you mean you cancelled your "Bicycling" mag, surely? Ride, last time I checked, was not all that thin - and isn't published by Touchline?

Talking about a lack of understanding - it's quite common for threads on the Hub to start off on one topic, and then branch out into another tangent... To suggest that "we are clearly confused" is a bit presumptious, wouldn't you say? Bicycling has been slated - but like the former, Ride is also a riding magazine - and so, a few of us raised some points about the Ride mag that we also do not appreciate... How is that confusing?

Regarding the bad taste of making "misinformed" comments about the publishing industry - might I (misinformedly) suggest that only someone invloved in or having a related interest in either "Ride"; the Publishing Industry; Touchline Media etc might find it to be in 'bad taste'....? Or is this simply me showing a further lack of understanding?....

Its not the first time that cut and paste articles have appeared in Ride magazine.

in defence of both ride and bicycling in this regard: many journals and periodicals worldwide have syndicated content arrangements' date=' so calling it "copy and paste" is not quite technically correct.

there are stories that appear in independent newspapers' publications that are from other newspapers around the world. some examples: the group can draw from the daily mail and independent in london, and the baltimore sun, washington post, los angeles times, hartford courant, newsday, etc in the states.

it's a pretty commom practice in the print media. you may even find rival publications within the same market sharing content in goodwill arrangements.

Ah, OK. Thanks for clearing that up HR. I am sure I wasnt the only one thinking that there was some major plagiarism on the go.<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Other than being a little thin for the price, I enjoyed the latest issue. It is much better than the last year or so. At least there was no articles on American baseball/basket ball players that we have never heard off and the reviews were on bikes that are actually available in SA.

in their defence, the best thing at the Argus Expo was a free Stella and a slice of pizza from the Bicycling Stand. Surely someone remembers that?

on topic, but generalised - I would not want to be involved in any magazine right now. Online content is just leaps ahead and i'm sure most publications have lowered sales. TREAD boys have balls!

my bicycling subs renewal just came up. To that effect, I got an email, a letter (and an sms i think). I replied to the email, saying that I wanted the 'offer' with the hamper rather than just reduced subs @R22. Seemed like new subscribers get better deals than exisiting. No reply, but not really gonna chase them up just yet.

What I also don't get regarding local mag subs are the free gifts. You spend R300 and they give you a R20 pair of socks. Oversea mags you get a back pack or other nice stuff. Just have a look at the overseas camera mags. You get a prize that us worth more then the sub.
