Guys, maybe a good idea is to put these thoughts on a mail to teh new ed.

I'm sure he would appreciate all feedback he can get at this stage.

He's not just a runner by the way, and besides that, why cant he be given an opp to prove himself in bettering the mag from what it is now.

He didnt do a bad job with RW did he?

I had that magazine and a Bark Essay in my room and I found the Bark Essay hugely entertaining.

Ha,Ha,Ha, - yeah I am a big fan of Bark Essay, Simon Fourie has it down pat and the mag just gets thicker and thicker every month.

The local cycling magazines takes themselves far too seriously, they need to loosen up a bit, pull their G strings out their butts and get people enjoying the social activities around cycling.

Oh,........... and I concur on Bicycling magazine.

I agree if something sucks , say it, but be brave enough to also say it to the ed, or to the mags publisher - OR someone who can actually do something about it. Take the trouble to engage in communication with them if you feel so strong about the quality - that is all I was saying.

Some hubbers just have the ability/inclination to be negative about everything. We have choices, why read it if you think its sh*t, you have an option. You also have an opportunity to tell them they suck - if enough people tell them that they will at least get a chance to fix it or close down

Except that the poor quality aspect of Bicycling has been mentioned on the Hub on several occasions! They could have been taken seriously and perhaps changes made but I have a feeling that they are dictated to by the Yanks......

If I'm not mistaken, Bicycling recently lost its editor? That aside - the quality of the mag has been dropping steadily over the last year - more and more cut&paste from the overseas variety, and very little local... It almost appears as if they halved the amount of staff and needed to rely on the foreign articles to fill up the mag.

I picked the mag up on Saturday morning in the CNA, and started walking to the till. Then I noticed how thin it felt - opened it up whilst standing in the queue - and by the time it had moved on 2/3 places - was practically done reading it... I turned around, walked back to the aisle, and placed it back on the rack. This was not something done lightly, as I have a Ride and Bicycling collection in the bike-shed, and this was going to be the 1st edition of the last 3 years that I was not to have...

Sorry - collection or not, a rip-off remains a rip-off. Here's hoping things improve markedly - since competition between the various mags is always a good thing....

Oh - and now for something completely different...

I've also picked up a worrying trend in the "Ride" magazine... Hasn't happened too often, at least not so much as to have me writing to the editor - but something jarred badly whilst reading a few of their editions of late...

Given that I've always had a mind for details in things that I read... I noticed the following:

I cannot regularly afford the UK and USA bike mags when they are released new on to our shelves. So, whenever I have a chance, I pop into Paperweights where, if you're lucky, you can pick up the same magazines, one or two months old - for btw R10,00 and R25,00, as opposed to R80-R100 new.

On 2 occasions over the last year or so, when sitting down for coffee and reading the UK/USA mag cover to cover, and then (coincidentally) the Ride mag directly thereafter - I noticed very similar "letters" written in by the respective "readers" of the magazines, asking for advice.... The one in particular stuck out, since the question by the UK/USA reader was vague to begin with, and the resultant answer [pertaining to heavy riders and their suspension, I think] was just as vague and unsatisfying... The UK/USA letter had its weight conversions in pounds Imperial...

Lo and behold, in the [then] current Ride magazine - the same letter popped up, this time from "Anonymous", virtually verbatim - barring the conversion from pounds to kilograms...

Now, I don't have a problem, per se, if for one month, for whatever reason, insufficient letters were sent in or too few good questions were sent in to fill up the letters' page - and as a result the editors figured they'd take letters from overseas editions, convert them to RSA conditions, and print them. But I do have a problem if this is not made clear... Why not simply state that the editors came across an interesting question in a fellow magazine and included it on the local letter page as a matter of interest? Why create the impression that a local person took the time to write in seeking to have their question answered? That just doesn't sit right with me...

My 2 cents....

I can show you an example in Bicycling (local & USA version) where the letter was identical other than for the name of the person that 'sent" it in. For the local one they gave a Gerriekoekemoeresque slant to the Archie Andrews US scribe......

Yip - really irks me - do they honestly think people don't pick this kind of thing up? I know it's not really that big a deal, and yet... well, it still bugs the hell out of me...Angry

Maybe I'm just making a mountain out of a molehill...
