i have bought a lot of stuff off the hub.  Only had good dealings.   Thank you to Matchstix for the spares were in the condition he said.

Scratch sold me a rear Campy Record Derailleur........  it was almost brand new.  Busy buying a set of Ergo levers.  The photos he sent, showed the marks on the levers.  His words were if you are happy you can have them.

Carlo sq sent me a bar and stem.  Looks as if it has never been used.

Bought a new crankset from Matchstix, and indeed it was new! Big%20smile When he saw that I had paid he went straight to the post office and sent it. Will not hesitate to do business with him again.

'Name and Shame' is all well and good' date=' but it doesn't prevent the problem. It is not a solution, it is a reaction to the bad already done.[/quote']

I really don't want to get into the 'Name & Shame' scenario. It really doesn't do much good. Just wish that people would be honest up front instead of trying to be clever about what condition they think their item is in.

Then what is the use of this ranting and raving. Rather post this under chit chat then.

If you feel you got screwed then tell the other hubbers who sold you the goods.

That is why we have people getting away with this sh*t just because people are scared to mention the name.

Hubbers are suppose to look out for each other and warn against people that wants to do you in.

Similar to the topics about which areas not to cycle in or were you should at least be more than one cyclist.

The next hubber that buys from this person and gets a bum deal comes along and puts the name up here for all to see. Now you come along and say yes that was the guy/girl that sold me the dodgy parts. You will look such a prat and the hell you will recieve from hubbers will not be worth it.

But then again I could be wrong and that we are just a bunch of selfish idiots that would like to see the other guy/girl getting ripped off.

What about Admin setting up a Poll for Buyers and one for Sellers. Something that you can add to and where you can vote for the buyer or seller you've dealt with. It's not ideal but at least a Hubber looking to buy can view the poll and see if the seller is listed and how many votes he has.

Simple solution for now until there's a rating system in place...

Cool Kevin I see what you saying. So a more detailed table perhaps' date=' covering all bases and defintions? Therefore if an item is advertised, a buyer can refer to it and know what they should be expecting.[/quote']

Mampara I fully agree with you. Guys why don't we have a system whereby the definition of 'new' can be defined. Like:

'Brand New': Never been used and still in plastic covering.

'New': Has beed opened but used only once.

'Like New': Recently bought and used but in very good condition.

'Great Condition': Used but very well looked after.

Hubbers can refer to these definitions when selling a product. What you guys think?

Still open to interpretation in my opinion. "Used only once" could be around the block or for one 100km ride through mud' date=' and once used it's no longer new.

If it's advertised as new then it should be unused.

Guys

One of the great things about having a well developed legal system is that there is certainty about many aspects of law. Buying and selling of goods is pretty straight forward.

The legal relationship between the buyer and seller is established by concluding a contract. At it's simplest the contact needs agreement between buyer and seller on the goods to be delivered (that would obviously include condition) and price to be paid.

Both an offer (I will give you the specified goods at a specified price, or I will pay you a specified amount for the specified goods) by the one person to the other and an acceptance of that offer by the other person needs to be present before you have any contract.

There are however two other aspects that are important:

An advertisement is NOT an offer. It is merely an invitation to conduct business. So the description in the advert plays no part in the ultimate contract other than getting the two of you together to reach a agreement. Don't get your knickers in a knot on what the words a seller uses in his advert. It is largely irrelevant. The seller can describe it however he wishes. If you don't like it, take him to the Advertising standards authority.

There exists a legal principle of "Caveat Emptor" which translates into "let the buyer beware" . So even the ancient Romans knew that seller may wish to be less than scrupulous in his dealings, so they explicitly warned the buyer. The implication for buyers on the hub is that you must not rely on the advert, you MUST in the negotiation (just a other word for the discussion that leads to the meeting of minds on the goods/price etc.) satisfy yourself that you are sure what you are getting. If you can't be sure, you must walk away or carry the consequences.

I have bought often on thehub. I have always either exchanged cash for goods or if I could not inspect myself ensured I have pictures good enough to judge for myself and that I had asked all questions I needed to,  and got satisfactory answers.

e.g.

So what do you mean, it's brand new ? Has it been fitted to a bike?

OK, so it's not brand new ?

You say it's like new, only been on the bike for three  weeks. Training of racing ?

Ah I see, a couple of training rides and a single race.

How long was the race ?

I see, the Epic and the last few weeks of training beforehand.

Thanks but no thanks.

I would not exchange money for any big purchase unless the seller is prepared for me to have the bike/hubs/shock stripped and inspected beforehand if I am not certain as to the condition..

.. and depending on how it is phrased and whether it constitutes an unequivocal acceptance of that offer.Confused

OK, so it's official - I have been shafted!!! I took the replacement BB to the mechanic and he's confirmed that it's not much better than the previous one.

In the interests of other Hubbers (and to avoid the wrath of OneTime) the Hubber I dealt with is 'Hill Climber'.

I've asked for a refund for the BB and would've asked for a refund for the crank as well if it wasn't on my bike already and I didn't have to pay again to have a new crank installed!

Whether I get a refund or not - only time will tell!

Such a pity to have a bad experience spoil the otherwise fantastic forum that is the Hub. Guess I'll have to be more careful in future!!

I've read too many threads with unhappy/disappointed purchases. Despite using the Hub as a great source of info, I'm not sure I'll purchase any items here because there appear (IMHO) to be too many sales that have turned sour.

Besides, with my limited technical knowledge I admit that it's too easy for some shady individual to pull the wool over my eyes- not taking that chance.

I have bought and sold a lot of goods on the hub and i have had no problems.

*Get a close up photo of the goods.

*Ask a fellow hubber to have a look at the goods for you if it's out of your area.

*Do a search on the person selling, google helps a lot.

*Trust your gut feeling.

*As a buyer you have 7 days under the second hand act to return the    goods if you are unhappy.

Valid points, thanks for the advice. But there are also plenty of examples of people who take precautions like the ones you suggest and still get burnt because despite their precautions the seller is shady and either misrepresents the items being sold or simply doesnt refund or respond after they receive the cash- besides, who wants the schlep of having to chase shady sellers, its a waste of precious cycling (or in my case, wobbling along Wink) time!

No wrath intented Cycle Fan. It will in the future help other Hubbers with  dealing with said Hill Climber.  I have bought and sold on the Hub for a long time and not once have I been shafted nor do I intend of shafting a Hubber.

Thank you for telling us who it was that gave you a bum deal and I hope you get refunded.

Well, no refund for the BB Cry. Not surprising I guess. Got a long-winded story about what a good deal got, etc.

Anyone know of a thread of blacklisted sellers, so that I can warn other Hubbers? Can only find the one of recommended sellers/buyers.
