People die from Flu.  Are you sure you don't have a common cold? either way putting your heart under stress is not a good idea. Cry

Ask Slowbee (the hubs local vet) he will tell you

To put it bluntly, is it worth risking death for ...

True story: My best friend, an elite canoeist bordering on Springbok level at the time, trained with flu. The virus damaged his heart muscles and he spent two years "recovering". He was pronounced fit by a team of respected cadiologists, started training again and reached top level again (missed out on Springbok team by one place in controversial selection) and six months later collapsed while training and died -- aged 26 years!!!

So, if you still believe a couple of training sessions are too important to miss, think of the alternatives.

Obviously I feel strongly about it.

The wisdom (and I follow this) seems to be, if you have a cold or flu below the head then don't train.

I may be wrong but the reason Amy Jane Mundy (two-time SA wiomen;s cross country champion) is only now slowly getting back into riding is a result of competing while suffering from a flu-like virus which affected her heart.

Flu is probably safe 80% of the time, but if it is affecteing your heart, you risk death.

Just to let you know i am joking.A few facts

I was involved in 12 heart transplants last year.

More that 50% were as a result of people who probably trained when they had the flu,a few were in their 30's

Don't f*ck around. We are all funriders anyway. The gain is little but the loss can be great.

Hope your answer is 1

Now that I have this kind of info about you Slowbee, I know where a dog like myself can turn to for advice smiley4.gif

To come back to this topic.

There was a time in my life where I rode, regardless how mild or severe the symptoms, this had me in hospital with chronic pneumonia, I have accepted the fact (eventually)that when I have even mild symptoms of a cold, it's my body telling me that enough is enough.........I normally take a nice rest and come back with nice and recovered legs.

and that right there is why you should not ride with the FLU!!! its causes upper respiratory problems, which in turn can cause your heart to stress which means you keel over and move on in life, helping stringbean along.

Note: figure out the difference between flu and colds.

Also professional sport players (thinking rugby here) who play, increase their death risk and also take loads of drugs to counter the risk. As another thread suggets most pro's are on juice anyway, so no need to worry about being cold on a hot day.

There is no common cold in SA - I've been here over 5yrs and no-one has ever said they've got a cold, common or otherwise. We should be trumpeting this breakthrough in medical science around the world.

Flu on the other hand - it's everywhere all the time in SA, but mostly people recover much quicker here than other places - usually in the same time it used to take a cold to clear up.

Coughs have also been eradicated, just leaving us with an increase of bronchitis to deal wiv.

And of course the cyclists here never get tired but they're often over-trained.

Ain't language a wonerful thing?

Flu compromises the immune system, and with training could overstimulate the immune system, causing it to attack the nervous system, leading to auto-immune diseases like Guilliaume-Barre or Miller-Fisher. It is also one of the possible effects warned against on the flu jab label.

A 30 y.o. friend is now walking with the help of a cane, and he had Miller-Fisher six years ago. Another friend did weight training whilst having the flu, and ended up in ICU for six months, and another year before he could walk unaided.

In short, do not mess in any way with a compromised immune system....

No No No

I'm not a doctor or have medical explanation and terms why not. Just don't train at all untill fully recovered

I've always trained when I had flu untill the one time I got pneumonia after I went out for a 50k ride while having flu, took me 6 months to recover after that episode! never again will I ride when im not feeling 100%.
