Hey guys

Im in the market for some new shades and shoes for MTB racing, as I want to use my old kit for training.

Im looking for a shoe with carbon soles and a ratchet strap and sunnies with a photocromatic lens from clear to grey/black.

Any recommendations? I have quite flat feet so something without a pronounced bridge(?) and that is quite wide would be ideal.

With the helmets, whats the difference between the Bell Volt and the Sweep?

Thanks,

WW.

I really like my Rudy Projects with photochromic lenses. They can be a bit dark (slow to change) if you are going from open/sun to dark/forest quickly or often you might find yourself blind in the dark or blinded by the sun. Perhaps look at the clear photochromics.

The thing with any photochromics is that they are expensive and arent particularly dark or particularly light.

The Bell Volt is a lot more expensive than the Sweep. There is still a 2009 Sweep, so if you get that you wont feel too 'outdated' with your kit.

I have VERY flat feet and have used Shimano shoes for a long time.

Happy shopping!

Shimano shoes all the way, the top of the range 3XX(something something) is the business! Full carbon sole, super comfy, wide and the moldable insert will help if not sort-out any flat foot issues. It also has a molded toe box keeping them in "shape" and comfy for a looooooong time! By far the best ive used incl spez, sidi, gaerne, answer (long time ago), time and previous versions of S.

Those carbon soles are particularly usefull for portaging over hard rocky ground!!! Even better when it comes to walking over rocks in a riverbed.Thumbs%20Up

I can recomend the Spez shoes, the Varus Wedge thingy would probably help your feet, they are also pretty spacious. Helmet - whatever has lots of vents and is comfy. I am not a fan of the poly chromatic lenses, they get dark pretty quickly but seem to take an age to get light again

Give Sidi a skip, there isn't an agent in SA anymore. Specialized Pro carbon are the business (got 2 pairs myself) You should be able to pick up an 08 pair for about R 2,5K

Carbon soles provide the best power transfer cause of their stiffness. Not great for the hike a bike bits but then who actually walks those anyway smiley2.gif

I don't use the Rudy's purely because I don't have money to buy them right now.  Eish...... but I would love to .... I was at Bruce's in Lynnwood on Friday, buying new pads for my brakes and nearly bought a pair  with the Photo chromatic lenses, but alas, i don't have the budget :(  Get em, do it man!

Saffa look out for a pair on the hub most of the time they are in good nic and you wont regret upgrading them as more cash becomes available thats how i built up my glasses and even though they cost more in the long run i think it is better because i now have custom ones smiley2.gif

Hehe thanks for the advice guys!

Got a Bell Sweep in the end, in white/blue to match my kit hehe, cost me less than crc(if you paid all the tax/vat etc. that is)

Looked at SIDI pricing but FFS they are hectic expensive, nice though!  Shimano looks like good value.

Ordered a few bike bits so will do some testing this month and try and get some shoes, gloves and shades the next one.
