I often train harder than I race but not necessarily "faster" and when I do this I do it on my own.

Fair' date=' but sometimes, it is "easier" to push yourself beyond when you have a carrot? [/quote']

I can agree with the carrot thing, I am always on the hunt for one when I do speed work.

Only take them on when you know you can beat them Wink otherwise continue at your pace and let them blast past without even reacting Cool. Training is not a race but it is great to have some fun occasionally. If you are training to a specific program then you need to be disciplined (particularly when doing base training) but cycle to have fun and if this includes petty dices do it if you enjoy it this kind of thing. If you don't then let the suckers go.

I find the whole thing pretty pathetic as well to be honest.

Makes me think they have spent too long in the sun and its cooked their brain.

If YOU don't respond to THEM then there is no race!  So don't get involved in the first place.

Who cares if it is pathetic, some of my best training rides have come about because I pushed myself by getting involved in a meaningless pi$$ing contest!!! Only this week I went out for a ride and needed to push, but I was lazy.  Then I saw a guy, knuckled down just to catch him (as a target, see motivational only!) and then the bugger responded by going faster.  WHAT WAS I SUPPOSED TO DO?!  We ended up rotating for some nice hard paced riding.  Great training.  What is wrong with that?

Lihgten up guys, it's only a bike.

Agree with willehond

i dont intend to race people but if i see someone ahead of me i use them by making a goal and saying in two minutes i want to pass them, just tonight i went for a TT ride and saw riders on the rand water road, worked out they were four minutes ahead and decided by the train track i want to pass them and i did but i only do it to build up the pace and it kinda helps mentaly but i dont pass and make it look like i want to race, i greet and tell them to enjoy there ride and occasionaly joke here and there but i never intend to race unless i am with Bigben and BigBrotherBen

Little-Ben, looks like we posted with the exact same attitude/ opinion!  SNAP!

It's fun to chase, but only if it helps your training goals.  If you need to push it's great, but if you are doing intervals/recovery/tempo rides just ignore the duelling fools.

haha thats cool.

I also only chase on a hard day, fast week rides are the best times to chase but on the weekends i just ride my pace, no need to chase if its not going to help,

during todays ride it was just to see how long it would take to catch someone who was 4 or 5 minutes ahead,

And to turn this around: Some people do LSD rides on racing days...

Why? Surely it is better to just go ride your bike, and not to pay strangers so you can do it?

On the Saturday before the Argus I did a training ride up Chappies. I hooked up with 2 other guys going up' date=' and we worked OK together. Then we came up to a really slim (if I wasn't polite I would have said really thin) girl and her partner. Before I knew it the training ride was blown apart into a fullblown, off the saddle, leg tearing sprint for the top. I got off the ego bus, dropped back and let them race each other. I had finished my interval sprints the day before, was saving my hard work for the race itslef, and I was not getting dragged into this. Never saw them again. [/quote']

...so you got dropped by a lady LOL

As the great Carmichael once said "keep your race for race day", but yea more than one person is automatically a race, just human nature!!

I sometimes go for long slow rides in town and suburbs far from home. You then come accross these locals with their ramshackle tingamaninges they call bicycles who wants to race. It just depends how far I have gone and how much petrol is in the tank, but i generally have some fun with them. We normally gets intruduced, I scold them for not having brakes and helmets and then I have somebody who generally had a little fun on the day.

The choise if yo want to be part of the sudden dice is all yours. Their day is different to yours and they might just want to have some fun. Maybe it is just someone who competes only because you are there. Share or ignore, its easy enough.

Hey if it moves I will try to race it. If it doesn't move I kick it until it does. More often than not I get dropped but watch this space.
