What's the best way to clean a greasy cassette?

 

 

 

What degreaser should you use?

 

 

 

Should you take the cassette off the wheel, or is it ok to leave it on?

I have been cleaning mine on the wheel up until now but last night took it off and will be my now preferred method as you can clean it thoroughly. I could never get it bling clean on no matter how much scrubbing.

 

Paraffin works the best as it strips the muck off but if it is off, Sunlight works wonders!!

Magic Maid's Braai and Grill cleaner. Spray it on and rinse with hot water. But then again my bikes don't get that dirty. I also like to use the yellow Clean Green concentrate.

1. Phone Caltex or your preferred fuel supplier

2. Get driver to bring tanker around

3. Attach hose pipe to outlet valve

4. Fill up bath with diesel

5. Put wheel into bath

6. Soak for 10 minutes

7. Scrub

8. Take wheel out of bath

9. Empty contents of bath down drain and pollute stormwater system.

 

Alternatively, try Prepsol which is available from Midas, far cheaper then the above method.

 

OR

 

You could remove your cassette entirely and ride a single speed.

But not nearly as fun. Is diesel good for the skin? Could be a cheap alternative to bath oil.

Probably best to remove the cassette. You then avoid the risk of getting degreaser into the freehub body.

Paraffin works well for me, think its cheaper than diesel so maybe try it in your bath. I know it will toughen you up a little.

Prepsol like thug said  ... You can buy 10-20 litres of the stuff from a place in Kya Sands, will last you forever!

I use the same chaincleaner for my bike (manula) as I do om my other bike (Superbike), suzuki in centurion sells a chain cleaner for R70 and it lasts quite long.

I have just purchased (ostensibly for servicing my collection of carriage clocks) an ultra-sonic cleaner.

 

Just stick the part in there, pour in some hot water and soap and switch it on. Go for a cup of coffee and come back to a sparkling clean chain resting on a spadeful of sand in the bottom of the cleaner's container.

 

It works on cassettess too, but the stuff that comes off there is nowhere as impressive as what comes out of a chain....or wristwatch strap for that matter.

1. Cut the bottom off a 2litre coke bottle,

2. Half fill with paraffin,

3. Use a cable tie as a hanger to avoid soaking your fingers.  Leave for an hour so.

4. Scrub with your wife's toothbrush for a gleaming effect.
